Look at the plants in this south facing window (partially obstructed by buildings): the pure green spider plant (left) is typically classified as “low light” but it is doing very well even with a few hours of direct sun. The Aloe x nobilis, typically classified as higher light, is actually a little sun stressed at the moment (see the slight reddish hue on some leaves – don’t worry, this is reversible). The key difference is the frequency of watering: given that the light is the same for both plants, now I am getting to see the difference in water requirements due to plant species. During these summer days when the sun hits the sill everyday, I’m watering the spider plant the moment I notice the greenness fading. For the Aloe, I water when the leaves feel just slightly less firm than with saturated soil.
