Willie, Sarah and their dogs, Jack Spaniels & Nori, continue their biggest adventure yet – leaving suburban life and moving over the sea to a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye, off the west coast of the Scottish Highlands.

This week, the Skye Lifers venture out into the garden, after signs of spring start to appear. We navigate the ever-changing weather conditions to turn the compost and start prepping our planters for the new growing season.

Plus, we show you how we celebrated Burns night back in January and we take a look at the area of felled trees in the forestry plantation in our glen, as we have an exciting update about it…

Thanks for watching & see you in the next video!

  2. Your place already looks to have the beginnings of spring. Lovely to look at. We’ve finally had significant winter weather and I have at least a foot of accumulated snow. That goodness I live where I do, we haven’t been hit with the storms like in the east. Interesting to add carrots to the turnips. I’ve eaten them together in stew, but not mixed.

  3. If your compost is super stinky (rather than just compost stinky 😂) are you getting the percentage of ‘green’ to ‘brown’ waste out of balance? Charles Dowding on YouTube is a font of knowledge on it – as well as no dig!!

  4. The tin foil was a game changer , I served this for my family & it included carrots and string beans on the side . I still love watching your activities

  5. Peter suggests drying the stumps – maybe putting them wigwam style so the air can get round them and help with the drying process. Once dry, they can be burnt (maybe not indoors!) and the woodash used to further enrich the compost in your planters.

  6. You definitely live in a slice of paradise, i definitely love this time of year over there with all those beautiful flowers. Take care and thank you for sharing your adventures 👏🙏❤️

  7. I live outside Montreal and we received 75 centimetres of snow in three days, we haven’t had this much snow in years. And now it is really cold, so Spring will be a long time coming😟. At least I can now go snowshoeing 😁

  8. I love your channel and watch all the time however I've never commented.
My staple diet it mash tatties and turnip, god I love it, turnip and carrots is immense, add a parsnip and im in heaven 😂 however, for Burns night it's haggis, neeps and tatties!!! ❤

  9. Scratch make pizza on saturdays for my dinner so with the overlap for burns night this year cooked off some haggis and used that as a topping.

  10. Cover the compost bin to keep the heat in and rain out. You don't want the compost to get waterlogged. You may need to add more woody material such as sticks/heather to improve the N:C ratio and improve aeration within the structure of the heep. A tarp will do to keep the rain off. If you have some old carpet, place it on the surface of the compost. Keep it as hot as possible. The composting process will speed up and be more thorough if you do.

  11. Planter season just round the corner Willie easy to make looks great, would be a nice addition to your wee road
I love haggis doesn't matter what you have with it….. but I'm with team turnip

  12. use dark chocolate not water to cleanse palate while drinking different whiskies 😉 . also a glencairn glass not a tumbler << sound like a right snob 😅

  13. Thanks for yet another super episode. .I agree with adding carrots but not in the neeps, mash them into the tatties. I was hands-on in bringing up my three grandchildren Now all in their twenties and succesfully through university.. They still demand "Grandads special mash" every time they visit!. Tatties and carrots boiled together and mashed with with my own secret ingredients. They NEVER leave anything. We used to spend a lot of time youth hosteling and camping in Scotland and we always had fried slices of haggis so it had a crunchy outside with special mash and neaps with a couple of eggs on top!. Happy days. Walter

  14. 42 years after leaving Edinburgh I made a traditional Burns night dinner here in northern Thailand. Local haggis, not at all bad, Ozzie neeps, darned expensive and local potatoes. It was a surprisingly decent attempt although not as good as the real thing. Looking forward to your next exploits.

  15. Your Haggis Neeps & Tatties looked delicious you should have served with a whiskey sauce on the Haggis
Check out Ali This little wonderful life her mum gives a burns reading
Your garden signs of spring are a delightful lift to the end of winter ❤❤

  16. In March 2016, Outlander actor Sam Heughan, came to Sydney Australia. He did a spot on a morning talk show and the audience was full of Aussie and New Zealander Outlander fans. They brought out a Haggis and as the person walked by us, it STUNK like it had gone off. Sam's face spoke volumes as he 'ate' it.

  17. The weather in Scotland is definitely unpredictable, but you managed to get your veggie plots prepared , which was a good job done! The haggis, neeps and tatties looked very nice,l’m with Sarah on having carrots and turnips mashed together, it makes all the difference to the flavour, but not traditional I know! Spring is hopefully just round the corner! Keep warm!xxx😋😁

  18. I'm caught up! I started with episode 1 on Feb 12. 🤣 Thank you for sharing your life, your work, your creativity, your inspiration, and your adorable pups (we have 2 black rescues ❤️). We live on a remote homestead in the grasslands in northeast Colorado, US. I appreciate that you've renewed my passion for what we do. ❤️

  19. haggis reminds me of sausage with barley. I actually like it. There are a few small distributors of haggis in the US.

  20. Thanks, for replying. Ive got snow! So no planting yet. Love your show, enjoying your living on an island.i also like the dirty secrets of scotland series. There must be old bottle dumps on skye. I hope youll start that series up again. Unfortunately, ive missed buying any of your bottles. Keep up the work. Hug your babies, and have a nice day. DEBBIE

  21. I love that your outfits in the outro matched Sarah's painting! 😂
Controversially, I like peas with my haggis, neeps and tatties, so will need to try carrots next time.

  22. Have never tasted Haggis. I loved the two of you doing the whisky tasting. A lovely video as usual. Have a lovely day.

  23. I hope you know the charming videos about the secret life of the Haggis, these sweet secretive furballs?…😁😁😉
