Key October Gardening Tasks:
Enjoy Your Garden: Spend time cleaning, adding flowers and herbs, and enjoying your space.
Vegetable Gardening: Learn when to remove warm-season crops and get your cool-season crops planted in the right spots as the angle of the sun changes.
Harvesting Tips: It’s time to harvest your sweet potatoes, pomegranates, and roselle. I’ll share tips on how to know when they’re ready.
Fruit Trees: Start preparing soil for fruit tree planting in January, and make sure you’re harvesting pomegranates at the right time.
Pest Control: Manage aphids and caterpillars, and incorporate companion plants to help keep pests away naturally.
Landscape Plants: October is the best month for planting landscape plants—find out why and how to plant them successfully.
Watering Tips: As temperatures cool, reduce your watering schedule for trees, shrubs, garden beds, and containers.
Herb & Flower Gardening: Prune and plant perennial herbs and get those cool-season flowers in the ground!
If you’re wondering whether to pull out your summer plants or make space for cool-season crops, I’ve got you covered with questions to ask yourself before making the switch.

  1. My roses almost made it, but this last heat blast has done them in😢
Is it time to trim gardenias? That’s the one thing that made it!
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us! 🪴💚

  2. One positive side for us, we have enough property to keep our summer crops as well as planting fall crops. I just have to get to it. 😊 😅

  3. Hi, I noticed on your Fall/Winter veg bed printable that Peppers are listed. Are Peppers a cool crop in your zone? I'm in 9b and thought they were a warm crop. Can you please clarify?

  4. Thanks for giving landscape plants some love. We enjoy growing food, flowers and landscape plants unique to the low desert. The cool down is coming. 🙏

  5. It's still 100°here in SoCal it was in the 80s i planted some sweet peas and they all are looking terrible. Gonna have to start over. So frustrated this year

  6. @growinginthegarden I'm also in zone 9b but am in Northern California. Are your recommendations ONLY for the low desert of AZ or generally for zone 9b hot dry gardeners as well? I LOVE your channel and really appreciate all of your informative content.

  7. Thanks for the videos, we are in North Scottsdale and have recently set up two raised beds, a greenstalk and 5 gal containers, summer was tough but now we are on to fall, appreciate your advise. Question: Where can I purchase one of those wooden plungers you have for planting seeds and bulbs. Looks pretty cool.

  8. Where did you get the rope trellis you use for your tomatoes. That would work perfect in my garden! BTW: always look forward to your monthly videos – so much info – so grateful!

  9. Hello, I had received a lemon tree as a gift about last spring, it was still quite tiny and growing well until one of my family members moved it to a completely different pot without asking me now it has been having yellow leaves that are starting to wilt and fall off along with some chalky white spots everywhere and these weird white squiggly lines from pests I’m assuming I could really use your help please 🥲

  10. Thanks for all the info. Excellent video.
I didn’t even know that you could plant the flowers now and then live through the winter months. I’m in zone 8b

    Thank you!!
