In this video I share 5 design tips showing you how to create your own tropical style garden. Wherever your garden is in the world, these tropical garden design ideas will help you create a beautiful garden space.
TIP 1 – Prepare the background
Think about the surfaces that are going to act as the backdrop to your tropical style plants. Use colours and textures that will work with the planting and enhance the tropical theme in your garden.
TIP 2 – Plant from big to small
Begin with planting larger trees, shrub and palms in your tropical garden. This will help create structure and begin to make the microclimate more favourable for the smaller more delicate plants such as Begonias.
TIP 3 – Plant in layers
In a rainforest environment every inch of growing space is full of plant species that thrive in each niche. We can take inspiration from that for our tropical style gardens.
TIP 4 – Add a splash of colour
Tropical gardens often contain lots of lush green leaves but we can add drama with colour. Colour can be added by using bold tropical style flowers, colourful leaves or even painting garden structures and ornaments in exciting hues.
TIP 5 – Play with texture when combining leaves
Combine a variety of leaf shapes, sizes and forms to add visual interest to your garden. The mixture of healthy foliage will add to the appearance of a thriving tropical jungle garden.
