I received this as a condolence gift after my father passed away last year. I do not have a green thumb. It was beautiful when I got it and now the leaves are browning on the edges.

I’m worried that I overwatered it? Also, we just left town for five days and left the heat at 60°, so maybe it got cold?

It gets watered maybe once a week .

It lives on a bookcase across the room from windows and does get direct some night every day. Not all day long, but at least least one hour, and then a lot of indirect light.

Take a picture and do google recognition secondly, I suggest you change the pot with one that has drainage holes.

Step 1: like another commenter said, take a picture of the plant and do a Google image search. You’ll learn what type of plant it is, and it’s needs. Sure, we could give you all of that information, but I think it is important for you, and all plant parents, to do that learning part by yourself.

Step 2: get it out of that box! I know it’s cute, but the inside is lined with a plastic tray, which basically suffocates the roots. Those things are typically planted with all peat moss, which holds moisture, and with the plastic liner, you will start to get root rot.

This is a Diffenbachia sublime, it needs humidity..the leaves are brown because it’s not getting enough. Diffenbachia are tropical plants

It’s a dumb cane plant. Mine thrives with lots of light I have it under a grow light but I’ve heard they can handle low light as well. They also love humidity so putting it near a sink or get a humidifier might be a good idea. I would say the 60 degree temp change hurt it as they don’t like temp fluctuations. Like others said it needs proper drainage so putting it under a pebble tray or a pot w drainage holes.

Once a week that’s too much . Hold watering and water only when the soil feels really dry ,give it a nice bright light to medium and it will be fine .

How far is it from the window? It should be within about three feet.

If the container doesn’t have drainage, then switch to a small pot is no more than 2” wider than the root ball. Using very well-draining soil is helpful. I mix pumice and coco husk chips into potting soil for most of my plants.

Watering should be thorough when the soil is fairly dry. Use the weight of the pot and feel of the soil and leaves to determine when to water rather than a schedule.

My house goes down to 63F every night and my plants are fine. I leave some outside until it gets down to 55F. Average home humidity (40-50%) should be fine for most house plants. Don’t mist it, that doesn’t raise humidity and can lead to disease and pests.

    Sorry for your loss.

It needs repotting, and distilled water…

Hello. I’m so sorry for your loss. You can take it out of the pot and do a diluted hydrogen peroxide rinse. Repot it in a plastic grower pot in Fox Farms Ocean Forest. A water meter and light meter help. No one is a Green Thumb in the beginning. It’s just trial and error and perseverance! If you need step by step help feel free to reach out.
