So cool, I knew you were in Michigan and shared our climate (Southern Ontario) on Lake Erie, didn't realize how close. So interesting, the history and keeping these alive, like your old tomato seeds. Minor FYI gros isle means big island.
This entire series of fruit hunting is completely fascinating! I love it so much. Wonderful saving process!!
Incredibly beautiful apple trees! It is so cool that you are interested in saving these antique varieties. You're such a stealth đ„· scion ninja!
Raise your hand if you too, have pulled over and grabbed plants and cuttings đ
More cool adventures! â€đ± â€ïž
Glad you covered the Jesuit Pear Tree. It is endangered. I had no idea there was one on Grosse Ile. Is it certain it is the Jesuit Pear?
Come to Davison Michigan
As a lover of American history and genalogy, your excitement over finding the pear tree at the end had me tearing up. Thanks for all you are doing to preserve this important part of our heritage. All the best!!
Strong work. Website called trees of antiquity that sells heirloom varieties.
My Aunt and Uncle had a huge pear tree on their farm in Minnesota. My cousins still have the land. Now I wonder if that pear tree is still there. I'm 58 so if the tree is still alive it's got to be 100 years old.
Enjoying the journey.
That pear at 17 minutes looks like it has survived at least two big storm breaks over the centuries. It will be indestructible. Try a very difficult task with a couple of these clones and see if you can get them to grow on their own roots. It's not impossible and it's more likely to work with the older varieties. Maybe after you have successful grafts.
How exciting!!! Keep us posted on the development of your grafts, etc.
Upe might wanna be careful aron those open thangs. Ole Ile old money , all ol money had skeletons . Where? Else ayooper gun fine ope in aye rea's ?
I hope that your new farm/orchard includes Shiawassee Beauty, Detroit Red and Detroit Black apples. Historic Michigan Apples should be prominent!
From one nerd to another, this is one of the coolest projects Iâve seen anyone do! Love it
I love this. Heâs geeking out about history, preserving history, preserving an âoriginalâ food source, and stewarding it to future generations.
I hope you do a video showing how you do the next steps with your cutting of the apple and pears.
Really interesting, thanks! đđ€đ
Open Space = Public land where you can spend time & reconnect with a natural environment. Basically spend time walking, reading, hiking, listening to the birds ect.
On my Father in law's farm in north western Pennsylvania he has a really old beautiful Macintosh Apple tree that we harvest delicious apples from every year, he's forrester for PA and says its one of the original Macintosh varieties.
I grew up on the north end of E River on GI. When I was younger, in the 70âs, we had apple trees, pear trees, grapevines and cherry trees. Also, my father was the supervisor in the 70âs and he started the Open Space program to preserve land. Btw, I just love your enthusiasm! Great work!
There are some ancient apple orchards around my area in England. Tons of varieties. We went picking last Autumn and found 2 varieties with pink almost red flesh. The most amazing and different flavour that I have experienced in an apple!
I feel your apple intrest. If you could save a few of the rare apple breeds on Manitou island that would be amazing. Especially the ridged green apples. I am loving the apple quest you are on.
Surprisingly I loved this. Iâm so glad you are allowing these varieties to continue on. Maybe one day you can plant one back in the spots where you took the cuttings.
