Winter doesn’t quite want to loosen it’s grip just yet on Texas so here’s how I plan to protect my garden from next weeks weather!
Although thankfully it doesn’t look like things will be as scary as the OG Snowpocolypse, these temps will affect almost the entire state and are worth getting prepared for!
Soon enough spring will be just around the corner!

You called me out! I'm in San Antonio and I put seeds down last week 😅
I don't know what to do!!! A lot of my flower seeds sprouted already !!!
In Houston and was thinking I was behind but glad was lazy now!
I feel like this weather is giving me whiplash lol most of what I put in the ground hasn’t come up yet so hopefully it’s all good 😅
I needed this a couple days ago 😂
Yes, great idea about holding off on the potatoes. That's what I'm planning to do as well! It will probably be warm again the following week…lol gotta love Texas weather!
I’m fortunate enough to have a greenhouse, and I have a propane heater for it 👍
I'm thankful for your calm, common sense approach to teaching and encouraging.
❤
Thanks Vanessa for another informative video!
Love all your info 💜🕉
Here in SA. I bought a greenhouse, I have all my peppers and tomatoes ready to transplant, probably going to start my melon and zucchini seeds
I am new to Texas and this was a very helpful video for me. Thanks for posting!
I’m in zone 7B… Which is in the Dallas Fort Worth area. I think the year after snow Mageddon 2021 they should reevaluate what zones really are. Since 2021 I think we’ve had colder winters.
We are below Houston. I put in tomatoes and peppers because last year it got so hot so quickly we never got very many tomatoes. I am covering them up like a hoop house for the coming freeze. It’s only 29 and for a few hours. We will hope it goes well. I started all these from seed. I may have to buy a bunch of tomato plants that are more mature after this.
Whiplash weather, like another commenter said. I’ve been moving plants in and out of the greenhouse like a yo-yo. Question: Bought bulbing onion sets from Tractor Supply that have been in a grocery bag in the garage for a week. I’m thinking about poking them in the ground real quick. My whole garden will be under frost cloth but no Xmas lights. What do you suggest? Thanks for a very well-timed video! All the best from San Marcos.
I really do appreciate your videos. I am between Fairfield and Corsicana and think it’s 9A. I see your broccoli and all your other veggies that have barely blossomed. How often do you fertilize and with what.
Thanks again. Loving your videos!!
❤❤❤Beautiful❤❤ Thanks daughter🎉🎉
San Antonio here. My canna lilies are barely coming back after the last freeze, my citrus & pomegranate trees only just made it through that time, but I'm very worried for them this week. My alliums should be good, but all my veggies are still hiding in my office in little pots. My husband bought me a couple dwarf orinoco bananas…just in time for the frost. 🙁
Thanks so much for this video Vanessa. I’m out in Llano. Going to water and add some mulch today!
Montgomery County, Texas
We are looking at 20 & 24 over night Tuesday and Wednesday-

Texas 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I am so over this cold weather. LOL We have one more freeze coming for us in Houston. My pooooor tomatoes.
Which greenhouse did you buy from Amazon? My sister is looking for one and yours seems perfect!
Where do you get your straw?
I got the GIM watering system after seeing it in your videos a few years ago. I'll never go back. I tried to DIY it at first – what a mess. Now I just buy from them because it's 1,000 times worth it.
Coastal bend here, i just got all my 'just for fun' plants back out in their places and we're only expected to go down to low 30s. So of course im going to procrastinate and then freak out at the last minute and cover it all again. 😅😅😅
DFW area. Temps are supposed to get down in teens next week. My blues bonnets didn't die back this year and actually thriving, now I'm worried. I have 2 Methley Plum trees and 3 satsuma orange trees. The 2021 hard freeze all but killed the only satsuma I had at the time. I've since bought two more The second one I planted also all but died, it's inside and doing well. The third this will be it's first winter. The plums this will be their second winter. I went with Japanese varieties because the are supposed to be cold tolerant down to 20 degrees. At the time I was in 7A. I'm glad that I found You and one other that does videos specific to Texas growers.
DFW area here. I have onions that are ready to be planted outside but I'm so scared of planting soon! I feel like I'm missing the window 🙁
I also want to sow some carrots and don't know if I'm too late!
Yea this sucks i planted 15 bananas in the ground 😕 here in Houston 3 weeks ago
My brother lives in Pflugarville, Austin. I love the weather and neighborhood. I was in there past summer for a month. I am glad to find your channel. I am in Atlanta, GA. I just checked my plants. This year we got lots of damage from the weather. Hope they will come back. Thank you for your tricks and tips sharing with us. Can's wait to start gardening.
We have to to get through 2-3 false springs before summer starts in April lol
We live near Houston and I already have seedlings in my green house. We have a heater going and heat mats. Praying they will survive. We have it in a sunny area and I taped up the windows. Also it is blocked from the wind. 🤞
Ugh! I knew the cold was coming & still put my golden & red potatoes in the ground but did put straw over them in hopes they will be okay. 🙏😬
I am in Waco, zone 8b. My yard is being taken over by chickweed, henbit and soon will be spurge. I have pansies, lisianthus, calendula, snapdragons, lambs ears, dill, carrots, collard greens, kale, and romaine. I have onions, garlic growing. I just started trays of tomato seeds last week. I have a lot of plants in the garage, and some outside ones I covered today. I got some roses I planted a few weeks ago, and worried about them. I staked my smoke tree and little gem. I didn't realize how tall the little gem gets and I put it as an anchor plant in the front yard. I think I will have to move it soon, it will be too large I think for the front yard? I have pots of lavender in the garage and think I should prune them back before spring? Soon I will be bombarded by chamomile, larkspur, vinca, gomphrena, and celosia!! Lol! I can't wait! I even have some volunteer bells of ireland growing. I suppose I should cover them? Anyways, enjoyed your video!
I couldn't agree more! I'm a couple of hours south and we will be also in the 20s. I bought a tree I'm itching to plant! lol – well, I'm itching to get the gardening started (and then complain about the heat!) 😅🤣😂 – My planters are still in the porch still, by now, I know better ♥I don't agree with the new zones. It's been getting colder here! I guess I am at the edge of zones, so it's a bit annoying 🤪
I'm so glad that I haven't been able to start yet.
Woo the snow so beautiful near your home 🎉,Thank for sharing your videos 🎉
New Braunfels says March 10th, but I never plant out until April. Then, fall before last we froze in early October. SMH Texas
What are mushroom blocks?
I’ve been looking for a meyer lemon for a while. Haven’t been able to find one.
Thank you for this info! I am a budding gardener who has started over the past few years. I am in North Central Austin. So your information is so applicable to me.
I am in Houston and always wait until Rodeo cook-off to put my plants in the ground. We always get that sneak chill around the end of February. Im a little worried about my fig because it just started putting on leaves.
Born and raised in Austin. This is an every year thing so I don't even bother until mid Feb for even starting seeds indoors. I make fun of the change to 9a because it's not even true if you actually calculate it. The problem is the data used doesn't go by seasons, but by year. That skews the data because if the coldest temp was 35 in Jan – Feb and thar same December the coldest was 40 the annual low was 35. Now if that next January you hit 10f and that December you hit 18f then the coldest that year was 10f. So if you look at the annual lows they were 35f and 10f over those 2 years, but if you go by season then they were 10f and 18f. Obviously we garden by season, not by year. This happens fairly often in Texas because our lows are based around polar cold fronts. We are an 8b.
Hi from Dallas , I was trying to figure the zones .. I’m glad I found your channel …
Thank you! Where do you acquire your straw mulch?
Hi, May I know if you are interested in reviewing our Yeryork Electric Tiller? 😊
