  1. I am sooooooo jealous of you & seeing the beautiful sun beaming on your gorgeous face, while I'm all bundled up taking my Golden Retriever (Kali) outside here in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦 zone 5b-check out what my weather forecast to come starting Wednesday!!!!!! Tons of snow

  2. Looking good! As a self-confessed control freak, I think I'm going to love your "formal" garden. The fountain reminds me of Aslan from Chronicles of Narnia. Oh the electrical box. How those little things interfere with our best laid plans.

  3. One suggestion about he fence situation is to replace sections at a time. Much more budget friendly and it solves many problems.😊

  4. Everyone is giving their opinion, so here is mine. You are heading in a good direction with your secret garden. I do like topiaries, but I feel they are competing with the fountain, (3 tall sculptural things close together). I think just a big boxwood ball on each side of the fountain might be better and would channel your vision into the fountain. Just what I see.

  5. Janey, instead of shutters on your windows how about just trim the windows with chunky baton trim? The style of your ranch house I feel doesn’t lend itself to shutters.

  6. Love the evergreen in the four corners in the sun/shared secret garden. The little snafu is a great opportunity to plant a flower/plant ring around them?

  7. May need to do like an Italian garden & do a lot of Italian pots since the soil is full of debree & other risky factors.
Plus pots can be moved around.
Dig up the grasses & move them. Maybe use some liriope.

  8. Janie, I think you're underestimating the growth of the two Evergreen trees you planted next to your house. The height these trees grow will hit the underside of the eave of your home and can damage the tree growth upwards and the eave.

  9. Well…your videos are real and honest. Its what I appreciate about your channel! The challenges in the yard keep us thinking and on our toes. Good job you two keep going

  10. Janet. Why not put those Emeralds in some big beautiful ornate formal cement pots from unique stone or campania. Then you could move them if you need to.

  11. What if you move the grasses to the the front corners on each side? I'm guessing they grow pretty big? Then it'll make a statement. I love the structure you've added to the secret garden! It's amazing how much different it feels.

  12. Why dont you add silicone that is water resistant ,or liquid nails on the back side so it won't show.My husband did that to a couple of mine. Hope this helps.

  13. Add crepe Myrtles or another small trees to your side garden as well and it will make it a beautiful shade garden in summer and you will have beautiful bark to look at in winter. I love mine!

  14. ❤ I love how you guys problem solve. I like the trees pulled out more from the corners too. They’ll be more of a center point than background now. I know you’ll make it magical.

  15. …don't hate me, okay?…I'd've planted the topiaries on either side of the grasses — not behind them. (Again, don't hate me) they're too upright, right against the fountain, which is already upright. The bottom tier of the poodles won't spread, enabling what is already planted (perennials) to be seen. Jus' my humble opinion; it's a done deal anyway. They ARE beauties! (I hadta look 'em up.) 😂🌳
    👩🏼‍🌾💚 =^..^=

  16. I was voting for those holly ball topiaries when you were at the garden center looking at your choices – wow, so many possible choices! Think you made the perfect one. They look great there!

Monty cracks me up. Does he think he’s helping by getting right under your nose? Too funny.

  17. I love the idea of the texture of the grass is there, but I think they’re gonna get too tall and big and block your top Aries so I think you should bring them for a little towards your walkway and out a few inches… so yes keep them in the same area, but move them towards the main walkway and over or outward away from the topiaries at least a foot… now I realize that’s from our perspective on a flat screen and we’re not in person with you…

  18. Janie: I waited until you had them planted. 👍The silvery, wispy, waving movement of the grasses, burgeoning up from the ground at the base of each of the Hollies is, actually, CHEF'S KISS, woman!!!!! 👠
    Well done.😘🤟🌿✨
Re: symmetry in a garden, the British garden designer, Bunny Guinness, counselled, that, in a formal garden: Strive for "perfection", but KNOW that plants are living beings, with souls of their own. Discuss what you want it to FEEL LIKE, with The Plant Beings.

Happy sunshine; California is a dream. I miss home (S.F.Bay Area) so much.

  19. Janey, utilities and water lines didn't make this easy. But what a great job you did! And of course Monty was giving moral support 🤣❤! Your gardens are so amazing and coming into bloom 😍 it's exciting to watch!

  20. Your fence isn’t ugly to me. If the black stain bothers you, try sanding the dark area and maybe even try scrubbing with bleach water to lighten it and then stain it with your original stain. Could it get worse? I can’t say for sure but I would try it on the bottom first.

  21. Love the topiary’s next to fountain
Move the Panicum to the dry creek bed area
    Keep the bistro table
Shutters won’t really fit in either for that space, but window boxes will be nice. ❤
