Hi! I just got this variegated monstera cutting and looking for tips!

The seller had it in water and I’m wondering if I should leave it in water until the roots have more segments or put it in airy soil to avoid rot?

I’m also not sure if this is thai constellations or some other kind? Other tips are also welcome, I have a regular monstera that does okay but I didn’t do anything special to help it, just soil and water with plant food every 1-2 weeks. It grows very slowly.

  2. Keep it in water until you have a nice root ball,,, it’s a beautiful cutting so good luck!!! (It’s an albo btw, albos will be white and small form, whilst Thai cons are primarily large form with creamy speckled variegation) x

Give it a nice amount of light to speed up the rooting process (I’d use a grow light if you can to avoid direct light burn) Expect browning on white sections- it happens to us all (Science behind it: white sections (and creamy, pink, whatever type of variegation) is caused by a lack of chlorophyll – duh because chlorophyll is green (I found it such a funny obvious realisation when I googled it 🤣🤣🤣) chlorophyll is used to photosynthesise, and lack of it means not as much synthesis THEREFOREEE lack of food, the plant kills off those white sections as it isn’t benefitting, only draining it. Other than that, white bits just burn from the light, they’re just sensitive as heck- at the same time, if you put it in the dark then it won’t produce any white bits as it isn’t getting enough light and needs to overcompensate by producing more chlorophyll. So basically I’m saying they’re picky things and you just gotta find balance 🤣🤣🤣)

Have fun and good luck again, she’s beautiful!!! If you want like specific tips I’d love to help, I’ve attached a pic of my huge queen 🥰

Leave it until the big roots develop secondary root system and then put it in soul, I usually mix coconut, lots of perlite, and tropical soil.

Don’t use a big planter just because it’s a big leaf, upsize if the roots need so.

Keep letting it sit in water. You’ve got a great start so far 🥰
