A friend sent me this pothos vine that had previously been growing in water – presumably in a smallish cup, based on the root shape.

Perfect, as I wanted to add it to an aquarium – I grow all my pothos like this and they’re usually very happy. But not this one! 🥲

The leaves are turning transparent. Too much water? But it was already living in water before! Can plants be shocked moving to a bigger water container, like they are from moving to too big a pot?

The new leaves that were growing are curling and dropping off. The roots still look healthy and have no sign of rot. The tank has an aquarium light and is by a window, so light shouldn’t be an issue.

Any guesses what she needs? What is she trying to tell me here??

They do look overwatered or shocked from the cold. And I agree this is a philodendron brasil

I think your philodendron wants a pot of loose, damp soil around the roots. We can root them in water, but its not an aquatic plant. The roots need air as well as water. For an aquarium, aquatic plants are your best bet.

  3. When you say aquarium, do you mean a fish-aquarium? Are you treating the fish with any specific chemicals? I’ve found that not all plants love living in water – but philodendron brasil (which is what this is) tends to be totally fine. I’ve had one of mine in water for years.

Are you sure there is no rot on the roots? My p. brasil have light/white roots in water – and there looks to be some blackened roots towards the base of the plant.

You aren’t submerging the leaves, right? Just the roots?

It’s definitely a philodendron brasil. I have one i took a cutting from and it’s growing out of the filterless betta jar and is doing great! Make sure only the roots are in the tank. Let the rest vine around the top out of the water. Any leaves under water will die, stems are ok as more roots will grow from it. Maybe it’s in shock from being moved to an aquarium?

Soil. Even wetland airoids can only survive in small, sterile amounts of water for so long before they start to suffer from nutrient deficiency, which can make them weaker to root rot and edema. Give that baby some dirt

    Brasil will live in water…
However there are 2 types of roots soil and water..

When you prop in water, they get water roots..
When they get transferred to soil, they start growing soil roots..
When you move them back to water, you have to remove the soil roots

Soil. She wants soil, and something to climb on. Maybe look into a moss pole and some nice chunky soil. I use a blend of orchid soil, cactus soil, and pro-mix.

It wants you to know that it’s not a pothos, it’s a philodendron.
Put it in quick draining substrate. Top off the substrate with Peat moss or coco peat to maintain some moisture

  9. I don’t think you can kill a pothos if you try lol
