my partner picked up this monstera from a friend who’s moving, it’s been in lower light so her leaves are sparse and he had just repotted but not watered her, so i totally submerged the soil before i realized there’s NO HOLES in this giant pot!!!
how do we think i should get the water out??? have my partner try to lift it and i stab the bottom of the pot with a knife or smth? try to pull it out of the pot then dump the water at the bottom? stuff towels in the pot til it soaks some up?? i’m going to change the pot once i can get one with drainage, but i can’t just let her sit in this soupy soil and rot!!

Do you have more soil? Change the soil
Find someone with a drill
Can you poke holes in it? I’d be cautious about using a knife and stabbing anything unintentionally
Tampon? I never understand people who pot them directly into what we call deco pots
Grab some paper towels and wrap it around the soil. Push it in to wear it absorbs the water. Then, tilt it sideways and keep pressing to drain out more water. Not so hard that you damage roots. Then fluff the soil up gently to kind of aerate it. Add cinnamon if needed.
That’s what I would do at least!
I have also used a screw driver and a hammer lol.
Also, monsteras can be grown in water, so that’s always an option.
I have done that. Just sacrifice, get a knife, dig all the way down until you get to the bottom and twist and bore the bottom. Twisting gets you to make more of a whole. Do it twice. I say sacrifice because your entire hand might have to be immersed in the wet soil and some people just find it disgusting.
You could probably let some of the water out of my tipping it over and holding the dirt in with your hands. Might be a 2 person job. Then just let it dry out. It’ll probably be fine
If that’s a plastic pot you could just drill a hole with a wood drill bit from below. You can do this with ceramic pots too but you need a ceramic/masonry bit. I do this all the time even though I tell myself that I’ll never buy another non-draining pot again.
The other thing I’ll add to drilling the pot – help her *use* the water. Getting her in good strong light will help her use the water quickly and/or getting a fan blowing on her will help her dry out and pull more water up through her roots
What type of soil is it in? I drowned my monstera with drainage and it was still too much water for it. I haven’t watered it in two months and it’s still very damp lol. It’s not dying but I haven’t watered it again and I haven’t changed the soil. I’d change the soil out even if you drill some holes it UNLESS the soil is made of more chunky materials that help it drain the water out faster.
Drill some holes into the bottom
Do you have a drill
I’ve an random thought and would like to get it clarified.
Now monstera loves humidity right? What if I keep the plant in the bathroom after the shower for some time and then keep it back near the window for the rest of the day? Will it help the plant to grow in anyway or not? Has anyone tried to do this already?
if you are really concerned on top of drilling holes you could also position it next to a dehumidifier if you have one which will over a few hours start to dry out the soil
