Previous owners parked their truck on the yard which is why it’s so patchy and bare. Any thoughts on how to approach this? I would prefer not to lay sod down as I have time to do what I need to do but anything helps. I’m in central Florida.

What type of lawn is it?
You can’t really have a nice yard in central Florida without an irrigation system; our weather systems and rain patterns have become so irregular. Your best bet at this point is to put down new Bahia sod. It will look nice for a couple years. You could try to put down Bermuda seed when the rainy season starts but it’s a slow process and you have sand, not soil, as a foundation.
You’re looking at a huge renovation project. Time and money and research is the ingredients. Research common grass strains for your climate zone.
I would drop a few dump truck loads of black dirt before doing anything. How much is your water bill or rate for usage?
It looks like you could get away with a couple sprinklers vs an irrigation system. Watering this will be key as you have no shade cover to speak of.
This is not an easy fix, but you have lots of potential. I would add some trees to shade the house a bit more.
Lots of seed, lots of water, and mow it tall!
