How To Grow Peppers From Seed At Home
1. Choose Your Seeds
Pick the pepper variety that you want to grow. There are many options, from sweet bell peppers to spicy chili peppers. Make sure the seeds are fresh for the best germination rates.

2. Start Indoors
Peppers need warmth to germinate, so it’s best to start them indoors:
Timing: Start seeds 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost.

Containers: Use seed trays or small pots with drainage holes.
Soil: Use a light, well-draining seed starting mix.
Planting: Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep.

3. Provide the Right Conditions
Temperature: Keep the soil at 70-85°F (21-29°C) for germination.

Light: Once seedlings emerge, provide 14-16 hours of light daily. A grow light is ideal.

Watering: Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.

4. Transplant Seedlings
Timing: Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date, when they are 6-8 inches tall and have at least two sets of true leaves.

Hardening Off: Gradually acclimate seedlings to outdoor conditions over a week.

Location: Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Space plants 18-24 inches apart.

Planting: Transplant seedlings at the same depth they were growing indoors.

5. Care for Your Pepper Plants
Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry periods. Aim for consistent moisture.

Mulching: Mulch around plants to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Feeding: Use a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks during the growing season.

Support: Some varieties may need staking or caging to support the weight of the fruit.

6. Harvest
Timing: Peppers can be harvested when they reach the desired size and color. This varies by variety.

Method: Use scissors or a knife to cut the peppers from the plant, leaving a small stem attached to the fruit.

With patience and care, you’ll be able to enjoy a bountiful harvest of home-grown peppers! 🌶️

  1. Yaaaaaa Ivan… you explain things…. so it's so simple to follow you….I will start mine in day or so …thanks

  2. Putting those in the Greenstalk? That's what I'm doing with some of my peppers this year, however I can't even think about starting peppers or tomatoes until early April.

  3. Looking forward to another year of your container sowing and growing. I followed your advice regarding container cherry tomatoes last year to supplement my greenhouse ones and the amount of tomatoes I got was extremely good in what was a tricky year. All the best!

  4. Hadn’t thought about starting my peppers yet so may have a go this weekend. Unfortunately my onions were a disaster. For the first time I Multi Sowed 4 trays of seeds just after Christmas and had great germination, so was extremely happy. Potted them on in to cells a few weeks ago as they had grown a good 5in and started to lean over and they all died. I have hit and miss with potting on multi sowed seeds. So I’ve just resowed some more onions seeds but this time in cells, hopefully I’ll have better luck.

  5. I've invested in a heat mat just in case I need it. Went in pound land today & they have a good selection of seeds, both vegetables & flowers, the packets are bigger than I've seen before, I got a few packs of things there's so many seeds in. Cheers Ivan..

  6. Did you warm that compost up before sowing mate?
Always think it's a bit strange sowing heat loving seeds into freezing cold sowing medium.

  7. Thanks Ivan, for this great update, it's all starting now even though it seems too cold to do much, lol. Take care and all the best. Stevie

  8. I planted some onion and carrots seeds in a propagator and they've started to sprout. Will try peppers but will wait as up here in Scotland still pretty miserable.

  9. My white onions sown on the 7th February just come thru. No sign of the red onions sown on the same day as yet. Will be holding off sowing peppers for a couple of weeks yet.

  10. Nice one Ivan , the one thing some people have to be careful of as well, is that when they pot on they will need the room for those seedling to be put in bigger pots and kept warm

  11. Hi Ivan. Where did you get the seed tray with propogater lid that you used to sow the onions in please? Your pepper experiment is interesting. Great to see you again.

  12. Hi Ivan, thanks for a great video. There are so many different ways to start seeds. I had almost 100% germination with my chillies and sweet peppers. I sow on the surface of a seed starting compost, which I had firmed, lightly press the seed into the compost, and cover with vermiculite. I place the cell tray under a clear lid and put on a heat mat under my kitchen cabinet light. They germinate within 7 days and then I move off the heat mat but keep them under the strip lights. I started my seeds in January and I now have lots of little stocky plants, which I've just potted on. Happy growing 🙂
