You're looking older. Your hair's turning white. ❄😂
Thank you for this video!!!
Great tips. Peas are my favorite. I've already messed up three trays. This will help me.
I winter sowed my peas this year in the milk jugs. Will they just germinate when they're ready to go in the ground?
Hi Gary,
About five days ago, I got a head start with sowing seeds for Danvers carrots and parsnips. It was a false spring, and temps got up to 81F for as few days. It is back to seasonable temps, and raining. Yesterday, knowing there was a good chance of rain for the next two days, I sowed seeds for turnips and golden beetroot. I’m lazy, and figured I’d let nature water them in for me. I did however, cover my raised beds with netting to keep the cats, birds, and deer out of them.
There are a couple heavy frost days with temps down into the mid-20s in the forecast, but overall, it is turning out to be a warmer than normal February with temperatures much like I’d expect in March. I’m going to give it a few more days, then reevaluate the weather. If it is still fair, I am going to sow seeds for snow peas, and shelling peas a week early, on or around the 15th. By the time they sprout, the worst of the freezing weather will have passed.
I have a lot of seeds germinating, and a couple left to sow, thyme and cilantro. The seedlings for my Big Red bell peppers, Sweet Banana peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Jolene Tomatoes, Romaine Lettuce, mixed leaf lettuces, Pak Choi, Tokyo Bekana Mustard, oregano, marjoram, and basil are doing great. I should have had sprouts by now with my Fordhook Swiss chard, and may have to reseed the seed cells with newer Rainbow Swiss Chard seeds. I’ve been rotating old seed stock out, and replacing them with new seeds, but that one got past me.
Bro shave 🪒 before all ladies unsubscribe 😂
i have often read the peas don't like to be transplanted. What is your take on that?
This is so helpful! I always thought snap peas HAD to be direct sown, and I ended up losing so many last year due to weather and things. I’ll try this method this year!
Perfect! I think i have been starting too early zone 7a. I just purchased root trainers today thinking that was my problem. Oh if you have any tips for spinach that would be great. Mine are not doing well after about a month indoors. TFS cheers.
I learned this lesson last year. Planted in cool March (zone 7 CT) and they didn’t germinate for several weeks (thought they were no good) then suddenly took off once the weather warmed. If I put them out already sprouted, will there still be a delay in continued growth if the weather is still cool (40s)? Or will they keep growing immediately?
Good tips. I've made that mistake of growing them too early. 🫛
I’ve used your method before – works wonderfully. I’m trying to pre sprout my peas this year as an experiment and then plant them outside as in one of your videos- ty so much for all you have taught me – Steve – zone 6 b
I've used the paper towel method to get seeds started. It works great and not just for peas.
Wondering if you ever use inoculant? If so, would you apply to seed after planting in seed starter or wait until putting into the garden?
I had never actually seen you on your channel until now. I always though you and the guy who does the UsefulCharts channel and another guy who does occult mystery topics were the same guy because of your voice.
How many times can you harvest those that you started in Dec. for the shoots? And then, after a while, can you plant what is left after the last harvest outdoors?
I've had great results by planting them out in the garden as soon as the root tips start showing about a half an inch. I do exactly as you showed, – soak for a few hours, roll up in the towel, put them in a plastic bag after spritzing with H2O2. I do it about one week before I estimate would be the best time for planting out. If the weather doesn't cooperate I protect the seeded row with row cover until the weather is right. I only plant my Alderman and sugar snap in the spring. The shelling and snow types I do as a fall crop.
I had no idea peas could be started so early. I start them with my beans normally. After this snow melts, I’ll get them out! Thanks!
Hi Gary May I know if you are interested in reviewing our Electric Tiller? 😊
I live in zone 9a south central TX and seem to have trouble growing shelling peas here. I only do container gardening with fabric grow bags and GreenStalk planters. Last year, I got dwarf peas to plant in my GreenStalk. I direct sowed them into the GreenStalk Feb 2024. They did not grow well at all. I tried growing the peas again last fall in grow bags. They started to grow well, then they looked like they started to die. Took a pic to my local nursery, and the manager said it was a fungus issue. He recommended a copper fungicidal spray, which I bought and used. Still didn't seem to help 2 of the pea plants, and they died. I want to grow the dwarf peas again this spring. Is there another way to curb the fungus issue if it happens again?
