Thrips… and a lot. You may want to consider wrapping it in a bag and finding the nearest garbage can.

Can I cut off the leaves that are infected the worst and treat what remains?

Thrips! I’ve had success treating them with imadocloprid and aggressively cleaning the leaves with insecticidal soap, rubbing alcohol, and a good shower. You have to catch them early, isolate infected plants, and prophylactically treat non-infected neighbors, though, and you have to be persistent. Even after I stopped seeing signs of thrips, I continued imadocloprid with every watering for a couple months.

I always find that thrips seem to pop up out of nowhere.
I’ve a monstera with them now. I thought I’d beaten them back, but they’d just retreated to reinforce their numbers, so now I’m treating with systemic granules. Will do every watering until they’re dead dead. I never want to turn around and see them frickin everywhere ever again.
