HELP! My Avocado Plant/Tree Is Crispy and I’m Panicking!

  1. I think I just murdered my most prized possession; my beloved indoor avocado tree. One minute it was thriving (well, at least living), the next it’s a shriveled, crunchy mess.

My soil meter said it was dry, so I watered it like I do every week. Then, as always, I set the pot outside on our screened in porch *briefly* (accidentally around 25-30 minutes, normally 5 min) to let it drain as there is a large drain hole in the bottom of this pot. The only difference? It was pretty chilly – about 30°F. An hour or two later… my avocado baby looked like it had aged 100 years overnight. The leaves are curled, dry, and CRISPY. It’s so, so sad.

Did I overwater it? Shock it with the cold? Both?? I’m baffled because I’ve done the same routine for a year with no issues (minus the extended length on the porch). Either way, my plant went to *absolute garbage* in record time, and I’m begging for help at this point!

Is there any way to revive my poor little tree, or do I need to start writing its obituary? Any advice would be so, so appreciated. Thank you in advance!

was it freezing outside when you put it there? I would try cutting off the dead leaves and searching this sub for words like frozen or left outside to see potential methods for trying to revive it back to good health.

Don’t give up on this tree, ever. They are sensitive but don’t die easily trust me. I have had two cases (young trees which I kinda left for dead – one had an injury, other excessive water, and they both recovered quite amazingly over time). She will recover, just give it time. Meanwhile do not place her outside her comfort zone.

Those leaves are definitely done for….but like even if your root system froze, I bet you can regrow them. Some of your roots maybe fucked up…..that looks like cold damage, but hopefully just to the leaves. I’ve done this to some tiny avocado trees (I’ve grown tooons of them, a mini forest) leaving them outside in the cold…some u brought back with a lot of patience….usually honestly I Toss them tho and just grow a new one. But just nurse it, be patient and see. But the leaves arnt gonna recover…lol they may even hang on and not fall off…possibly, and maybe they still create energy? I dunno. But they’ll stay looking like that. New ones can grow and look good tho.
