Is this lawn dormant or dead?

First time home owner. This is a 20×20’ bed of Zoysia put down from sod last June. Watered regularly and it took root well (I’m on loamy clay).

After a few months it didn’t stay thick, but since the area is partial shade, I expected it. Didn’t know what to expect headed into winter. I’d say most of the green faded out by December.

I’m in central Texas and it’s already in the low 80s. Ground should be plenty warm. Should I be seeing new growth by now? If not, anything I should be doing?

The former. Look again in a couple of months.

Have you never seen grass in winter before? That is just dormant. It’s dead if you walk across it and it just cracks and disintegrates.

It’s dormant. Probably won’t start really growing until April or May

Definitely dormant. I’m in NE Florida and my zoysia looks the same, didn’t come back until late April last year

    General rule of thumb:

    Yellow/brown = dormant

    White/grey = dead

Not 100% accurate of 100% of plants but it is true enough for most grasses people have in their yards

Looks a lot like my zoysia right now which is dormant. Won’t green up until April/may. Enjoy The superbowl and don’t worry about it
