Looking for input on how to correct the drainage issue in my back yard. After a good rain, it’s just a mud pit for days after. We have a decent amount of clay thought out the yard. I’ve looked into French drain but was trying to avoid running one right through the middle of the yard unless I absolutely had to. What other options do I have?

You might be interested in a vertical drainage system. You wouldn’t have to trench, just dig deeper.
The main problem is you don’t have any grass. That may be due to the water and runoff or it could be due to the clay content of your soil. At the risk of making it an even muddier mess you should probably start with a top soil ammendment. Pick up a sandy loam top soil from a local landscape supply company and order enough to put down 2-3 inches across the yard. I would also get some closed french drains installed for the gutter down spouts as well. That will drain the roof runoff under ground and keep the lawn from becoming unevenly saturated. Once that’s done seed or sod the new top soil and that should keep everything from becoming a muddy mess.
