Getting Started
Growing onions from seed can be a rewarding process. You’ll need to gather the following supplies:
Onion seeds (your preferred variety)
Seed trays or pots
Seed-starting mix
Grow lights or a sunny window
Compost or organic matter
Garden bed or containers for transplanting
Mulch
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Sow Seeds Indoors
Start your onion seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Fill your seed trays or pots with seed-starting mix and plant the seeds about ¼ inch deep. Keep the soil moist and place the trays under grow lights or in a sunny window.

2. Transplant Seedlings
When the seedlings are 3-4 inches tall and the danger of frost has passed, harden them off by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for a week. Then, transplant them into the garden bed or containers. Plant them in rows spaced about 12-18 inches apart, with 4-6 inches between each plant.

3. Prepare the Soil
Onions prefer well-drained, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Loosen the soil to a depth of about 6 inches and incorporate compost or organic matter.

4. Watering and Care
Onions need consistent moisture but be careful not to overwater. Mulch around the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Remove any weeds that appear promptly.

5. Harvesting
Onions are ready to harvest when the tops start to yellow and fall over. Gently pull the onions from the soil and let them cure in a dry, well-ventilated area for a few weeks. Once the outer skins are papery, they can be stored in a cool, dry place.

Tips for Success
Thin seedlings if they become too crowded.
Rotate crops each year to prevent soil-borne diseases.
Use a balanced fertilizer to provide essential nutrients.
With a bit of patience and care, you’ll have a bountiful onion harvest! Happy gardening!

  8. Hi – been binge watching many of your videos, as I am starting my own vegetable garden this year!

A question about when to put onion seedlings outside – when can the seedling trays go into the greenhouse? I’m worried about the temperature being too cold, any advice greatly appreciated.
