My garden gets only a couple of hours of morning sun, but that doesn’t prevent me from growing a variety of edibles and ornamentals!

🌸 Here are a few of my favorite perennial flowers for a shady balcony garden🌸

1. Clematis, especially the spring bloomers like C. montana and C. alpina

2. Begonia, all types, the tuberous varieties are worth trying because the tubers can be saved and stored from year to year

3. Lilies do surprisingly well with just 2-3 hours of sun!

4. Hydrangeas, the best options for shade are H. arborescens and H. macrophylla. The climbing hydrangea will also do well in a northern exposure, but I find it too large to be grown in pots long term

5. Tiarella, a very winter-hardy perennial that produces a cloud of small flowers from late spring into summer

6. Astilbe, another shade garden classic that grows well in containers! Just don’t forget about regular watering, as these plants don’t like to dry out

7. Scabiosa, pollinators’ favorite, this one is a must! It appreciates some direct sunlight, but will do well in shade, as long as it’s a bright spot
