This plant, in two parts, had been growing for about two years. Any ideas why it might have just toppled over with what looks like zero root support?

Watered when first inch was dry and kept in partially direct sunlight.

You were watering too often. You should let the soil dry out completely and stay dry for at least a couple of weeks before you water again. The soil should dry in less than a week. These should spend more time in dry soil than wet soil, watering once a month is usually fine for snake plants

I water mine maybe once a month. Maybe once every two months during winter. Watering when only the top inch is dry is way too soon.

Stick that piece in some water to allow it to build a good root system and you have yourself another plant or a little gift to give someone!

  4. Its rot, your plants roots are gone, don’t water it for two months atleast
