My husband knocked over my amaryllis and one side now has bent leaves. My plant already has comically large leaves and hasn’t produced a stalk since I planted it. I got the bulb in a kit as a gift so I have no idea if it’s flowered before or not. I planted it in November.

What should I do? I’m wondering if I should just cut it back and try again next year since it doesn’t look like it’s going to bloom. Or do I just put it back in my window as is?

Believe it or not, its absolutely fine. Even though the leaves are bent, they’re probably still contributing so ‘leaf’ them be hehe. The bad(ish) news is that hippeastrum leaves are hysteranthous which is a fancy word for appearing after the flower – which also means this this bulb wont flower… this year. Let it sit and photosynthesise all year and cut the leaves right at the base just before winter. Next early spring, it will hopefully throw a flower stalk.

Amaryllis really are an investment, but with a wonderful pay-off. This was one of mine last week.
