Afternoon, my backyard has slowly turned into a desert / wasteland. I have two black labs that dig and run but I’ve noticed how my grass is slowly receding / disappearing. Any suggestions? I am in the south Mississippi area, (Gulfport)
Too much going on and not enough sun. Time for CHIP DROP!

It looks like your tree could use a trimming. Aerating would help with soil compaction. You look like you need to bring in some soil due to erosion (plus it’ll help keep water from pooling up). Agreed with the other guy, throw sod down. You could do this all for a couple hundred dollars.

The dogs are doing the most damage you can see where they run.

See that side bit you got there near the fence? You need to fence that area off and turn it into a dog run. You could install gates there for pretty cheap. That’s how I built mine. Then train doggy to go pee there. After doggy learns to pee there, then you let them out into the yard after they have peed in the dog run. Once they know that is the toilet then you can fix your yard!

You need a lifestyle change to grow grass there.

Aeration. Looks like a drive way.

I feel like the deleted comments are related to fido there but the dog and the gutters seem like a lot of your problem, maybe a cable dog run would contain him to part of the yard? Other than that aeration and bringing in a few truckloads of dirt to level it all and an aggressive seed and water/ fertilizer schedule

Forget real grass and get astroturfing

Soil looks compacted. If you struggle to push a screwdriver down into the soil, it’s compacted and you need to aerate it.
I would then top dress with compost to provide beneficial nutrients and organisms to the soil.
Dogs, kids and heavy traffic will make it hard to maintain grass. Not impossible but will require some maintenance to keep it from remaining like this.

Looks like you have a problem with water, erosion, compaction going on there.
Start by installing some gutters and down spouts, also run some drain tile away from your home.
Then properly grade the yard with good topsoil and either sod or seed along with some good quality starter fertilizer.
