What should I do next? I’m in zone 5b and we are still very much dormant. The holes are filled with some stump grindings and some soil. Have a ways to go time wise before I could do a spring seed but what would be some logical steps to prep these areas.

  1. You may want to skip a season and just let the soil and area recover a bit. Reason being, when you grind a stump down, call it 12” below the surface level, all of the taproots and vertical portion of the stump will begin decaying. After a year or so, you’re going to have a crater of sorts as everything gets worked back into the ground. Totally fine to put topsoil back on top and work in some fertilizer to start getting it ready for planting, but just a word of caution before jumping into laying down sod or seeding.
