On today’s 2 minute garden tip, I share a huge mistake many gardeners make when pruning trees, especially when pruning fruit trees. Every gardener should prune trees annually. Proper pruning technique not only controls size, but it keeps trees healthier, promotes vigor and increases fruit set. But, whatever you do, don’t prune too soon: don’t make this painful mistake when pruning trees!

So glad I saw this video. I had contemplated pruning our pear tree in zone 6. It is a very old tree and the previous owners did NOT take care of it. Thank you for your sage advice.
Excellent advice! 👍 Thank you
Well, I just pruned my fig trees that were not big at all. I did this just before we had this horrible snow in coastal storm in coastal Alabama! I did mulch around them and cover them with large planters. Hopefully they won’t be affected or damaged too much. It’s to be 67 by Thursday, so maybe that will help them some. I hate to loose them after just planting them in the ground ( I had them in large planters for 2 years).
I live in zone 7b.
I was told that apples and plums should be pruned in March. Is this true?
Is there a pruning guide for each zone on when to prune each type of tree or bush?
I'm in zone 9, CA. We had about 10 days clear warm weather, the roses are breaking their forced dormancy, and my figs broke bud too. I'm going to wait until Valentine's day, I think, in case of a late cold. It happens sometimes. Hard frost is unusual here, because of the wind too.
More good advice, thank you. Think Spring!
Not relevant to fig trees housed in a tub. Mine is inside and already budded and growing some healthy new branches. The tub soil has a handful of vigorous new stems several inches above the surface. Two years ago I got no figs. Last year I got two figs. You recommended pruning new stems erupting from the surface to cut out the competition. However, this 4-5 year old tree in a tub hasn't been very fruitful for two years. Last year it was replanted in a larger tub, and its roots were well-pruned. I am not convinced that a whole new stem or two might not deliver more fruit. Parenthetically, I have my mini-garden on the 3rd floor balcony facing almost due east. Usually, there is a lot of sun in the AM. What I've noticed is that the last three years has witnessed a rather substantial decrease in various insects visiting my "farm." In fact, I've taken to pollinating some of my veggie blossoms, mostly squash & eggplant. This seems to work well.
Smart tip.
No pruning for me today but I did do a good amount of seed starting today. Four varieties of onions and two of broccoli..

I talked to Stan McKenzie after learning about him from your page. He’s the best and I’ll be buying my trees in March.
Questions, we are here at Ft. Bragg and we have three, two year old fig trees that are in five gallon buckets. Should we bring them inside for the rest of the cold weather or put them along our house on a south facing wall ?
I pruned mine just a little haven't looked to see if they died back some from the hard freeze last week7b newalbany Mississippi
You should remove the leaves of your apples
Thanks! Sounds like even though we are getting some warmth there’s gonna be more cold on the backside of next month.
Thank you for the video.
Today in central PA im pruning, the sub zero weather is gone for the year i think , did some serious pruning today and more Monday to do
Again with the rubbish claim that you have to prune every year… This is false. Only a few trees like peach and fig benefit from this. Apple and pear trees don't need pruning once formed unless branches are rubbing on each other. And finally, apricots, cherry or plums don't need pruning at all. So why this BS claim ? Yeah they'll probably survive if you do, but they're known to hate pruning, especially in winter. If branches are to be removed because they rub against a fence or something, plum cherry or apricot trees are always pruned right after the fruit production, as they're less prone to disease. But realistically, you just leave them to their own device after the first couple of years of forming the tree. This obsession that pruning = more production is just dangerous and not based on actual evidence.
Thanks so much!!😅
Good quick tip! Thanks
Thank you, brother, thank you.
Thanks for the video! I heard if you want your fruit trees to stay small, then prune in summer, because pruning in winter or spring stimulates growth. Is this True? Is there anything bad about pruning in summer?
