I started a desert container garden last year and have had mixed result, here in the extreme heat and cold of the Palm Springs desert area.

  1. Hello, Steve! Love seeing and hearing the good and bad of your plants. Happens everywhere. I live in western Pennsylvania just north of Pittsburgh and my yard is about an acre. Half flower beds and half grass. Our growing season is mostly March till November. We do get some pretty cold winters. I like growing perennials that go dormant and will winter over. I have the same problems you do. Some like to grow in pots, some in the ground, some in a certain spot in the yard or do better on one side of the house. I’ve also found that some plants won’t grow with other plants. I have learned to get at least 2 of a new plant and put them different places to see where they like to grow. Some just don’t like it here at all but my neighbors can grow them. Not sure what to say about your pot that split. That’s only happened to my once with a plant that was in the pot for quite a few years and was very root bound. That plant was much better being root bound. I repotted it 4 years ago and it wasn’t doing well. This summer I put it in a smaller pot and it doing fantastic. You just have to keep trying different things to see what works. Love your back yard.

  2. Hello Steve, I know you want to get back to normal. But please remember we are not young men anymore. Your mind says one thing. Your body tells you something else. You have to pay attention to what your body tell you. It was hard for me to realize I can’t do what I was able to do ten years ago after three heart attacks. Just be careful. Now for your plants, spray them with neem oil if they have bugs. It’s an organic insecticide. I use it on my outdoor plants and it works well. We have oleanders in containers. And you can control them better in containers.

  3. Try a few more herbs. Herbs originally started as weeds and a lot of them can live through some harsh conditions. Plus, the herbs are edible. Since your rosemary is doing well try curry. It grows and looks similar to rosemary but is a silver color and very fragrant. Chamomile is another one that grows well in very dry, hot spaces here. There are several types of thyme. The ones that grow like a small bush do well in dry hot spaces. I saw your lantana came from Home Depot. They are one of the best places to get herbs to try. Good luck!

  4. Lantana-my favorite- we had no rain in our area this year until Nov! Paid large water bills! Then the gopher came-drat! Very disappointed! We are trying to move on!

  5. Hi Steve. You are looking good. You might want to check out native plants which have adapted to where you are. Likely you have a nursery that specializes in native grasses. flowers and shrubs..

  6. Your garden looks great Steve ! The heat we had this summer was crazy and made it difficult for plants to really thrive, I think. The lavender is probably dormant, so maybe just cutting it back, and then seeing how it goes after that.
Glad you are doing better Steve! Love your channel.

  7. your yard is looking really nice Steve, plants are beautiful and now that its cooled off they will come back, luv those lantanas

  8. Hey Steve, gradually start back on the long walks. Especially when it’s hot or muggy. Now to change the subject, have You heard of the Plant App? You put in the Plant or Flower and it gives You advice on how to bring back your plants and how to care for them. Trust me, it works! This is another great video and hopefully You.save those Beautiful Plants and Flowers. Thank You for sharing Your video with us. Blessings to You and Jim!❤❤❤

  9. Nice! We’ve had great luck with elephant grass plants in pots in Arizona. They grow like weeds. No flowers but they add nice greenery to the yard. And you can repropogate them. Just break off stems, stick them in another pot and they grow. We have 4 pots of them now from one plant.

  10. I lost a couple of succulents during the peak heat, but then had a nice courtyard desert scape installed in September….everything is doing great so far. I noticed that some of the barrel cacti in town were damaged by the intense heat! 🌵Thanks for sharing your beautiful potted garden, PS whenever I’m doing errands around town if I see someone in your hat walking I slow down to see if it’s you….i have to get out earlier in the morning! 😂

  11. Hi Steve…. beautiful backyard….your plants are lovely…most of them….I guess hot weather a cement wall ..plastic pots…no breeze …makes havoc….not much you can do …water…mulch. …a fan ??? …might help….a dip in the pool…. take care…… Deborah 🇨🇦

  12. I keep trying to plant in the ground..just doesn't work..I think I'll do what your doing all container

  13. I wished I had a green thumb. I'm no good with plants. 😂 . I always love looking at your patio. It always looks so inviting and peaceful 😊

  14. Plants can be finicky. I use to go on our high desert Landscape Tour where homeowners allowed visitors to view their "water wise" gardens of native plants. I remember someone sharing if a potted plant dies quickly and it is in full sun next to a wall, it should be moved. Often the heat radiates off the wall to the plant and dries out more quickly. Also, a plant like Aloe, if it is grown in part shade then it will require more shade than another Aloe that is raised in full sun. I noticed in a local nursery that they use a screen mesh cover over many of the potted plants during the day even if they list it as full sun. One owner of a nursery told me he buys some of his plants at a nursery near the coast! I'm sure Home Depot/Lowes, etc. does this also and I'm guessing some plants find it difficult to survive in desert heat vs coastal sun. Hope you can figure out a plan.

  15. I do not have a garden as I live in a apartment and no where to have plants whatever like a garden . Used to have hanging flowering baskets that hung on my near my porch and Mom used to have a small garden at the trailer and hanging baskets at the house I grew up she had a garden and flower garden hanging baskets and we had a cherry tree cat nip bush rose bushes and liliac bushes when we had Dads house then moved to the trailer in March 1998 . We sold it for 87,900 but now its worth over 200,300 some dollars .

  16. It’s like that here in Florida you can’t walk in the morning you can’t walk at night. It’s just hot and humid. At least you guys have a dry still hot, but humid is brutal.

  17. Hey Bud, I know nothing about desert landscape but are u sure the ground plant issue has nothing to do with moisture I just noticed you don't have any bark or Mulch. The yard looks good though

  18. We were lucky with our garden this season. It produced so much yummy vegetables for us, which we are still eating! It hasn't rained in New Jersey in almost two months, really wreaking havoc on our plants and lawn. So glad you're doing better!

  19. Do you water more than once per day? In that heat, the water is gone very quickly. Water at nightfall, this will allow better saturation. I noticed a few cacti in the shade and a few flowering plants in constant sun, perhaps swap them with one another. Saturation while the sun is not out will be your friend. The perimeter is not excessively large. An inexpensive watering system might be to run perforated garden hoses all along the wall connected to your spigot. Just turn it on at dawn and at dusk; never water midday – it’ll just evaporate in minutes. Lovely yard. I’d fry as a ginger. I LOVE heat so long as I’m in the shade. Great video. Hopeful you continue to gain strength back.

  20. I think some of your flowering plants aren't doing well & not flowering nicely because they're not getting enough nutrients from the soil. Even though you may have used miracle grow soil or some other brand, flowering plants draw a lot of nutrients especially when they're in their flowering stage. At the beginning of the seaon I always sprinkle fertilizer granuals on top of the soil & around the plant in the container which you can purchase at the home depot or Lowe's.. I also always then place a layer of mulch on top of the soil &'around the plant in the container as well to help hold in the moisture so i don't have to water as much. People always put mulch down on flower beds but it works well with containers too. The lantana that you placed directly in the ground that died, may have been infested with insects (some of which can be microscopic & not seen w the naked eye) & not from the heat or lack of water. Its hard to tell from your video. You may want to look into some natural insect repellent for plants like Safer soap or some other kind that you spray periodically on the plants. (Insects dont like soap!) Lastly, with your hot desert heat, i would avoid plastic containers & only use clay or terracotta pots. Let me know how it turns out for you. 😁

  21. I have a couple of potted plants by my window in my kitchen and that’s it for me. My yard seems to be okay. It’s starting to cool down here in Toronto. It’s a beautiful time of the year. I am glad that you are walking again even it’s little by little, Steve. Great to see you! ❤

  22. Hi Steve, maybe the plants need a liquid fertiliser. I use Seasol and Pro Feed as it helps plants in distress after repotting etc. I’m not too sure if you have them in the US, I’m an Aussie but you should have another similar. Just a thought, I’ve been using them for years and swear by them. Happy gardening 🧑‍🌾

  23. I live in Mesa, Arizona, it gets as hot or hotter. Lantana hated this last summer, I don't know why they don't live. The first succulent is a "firestick Plant' the second is a "slipper Plant" In the summer, I take everything out of 100% direct sun, even the cactus in pots.. they just get cooked and watering doesn't help, it can hurt. oh, that's a Date Palm and the seeds are messy. Be Careful when you replant the Firestick plant, the sap is very toxic, if you get it in your eye, it's a trip to the ER. Yes, the rosemary loves the summer heat.. so crazy. I don't like the way Lantana smells, so I don't have any of them. Lantana can get cooked by the sun coming off the walls.. those that survive may get less sun, maybe on the south side or close the wall so they don't get afternoon sun if on the west side.

  24. I understand about the allergies. Mine are awful. Even with the flu vaccine I have the flu. My health has been going down. I now have kidney failure. I will beat this but for right now I don't feel very well. Praying for you my friend. Don't push yourself. The weather has been crazy this year. Praying for you and Jim. Love you my friend. Please take care of yourself. We all love you.
