Im located in Southern California and had tall fescue sod installed in November of 2024. Some patches are growing like crazy and are dark green while most of it isnt growing much and is a mix of yellow and green.

Watering every other day for 10 minutes or so. Have not applied any fertilizer to it yet. Is this just to be expected in winter or is there something extra i should be doing to it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your answer is staring you in the eyes and laying in the picture. Lol. Dark green spots are from urine.

  2. That lawn has clearly been claimed. Just pick up the poo and mow it.

Perfect yard for a small manual reel mower. Mow twice a week and learn to sharpen and adjust the blade. Get a rolling edger hand tool as well.

Water in the dog pee after they use the grass, and you should have a lovely hand kept lawn in no time.

Maybe more water? Lift up area under the greener part and then the worse areas and compare water soil content.

Your dog’s pee fertilized the dark green spots. If you’d recently fertilized, those dark green spots would likely be dying.

    Classic dog owner dilemma.

*Something* has improved the nutrient level in those areas. Could be dog, could be old stuff under the lawn, whatever. Improve the whole lot to make it match. Liquid fertiliser with decent iron content should help make darker green. Mow regularly to maintain heights
