  1. Two days ago I found one of these on the curb for yard waste pickup. Home Depot was selling these as Christmas decorations. It was still in it's nursery pot but looking pretty dry. I brought it home and was able to dig a good size hose to plant it in. Hopefully it will survive.

  2. I can confirm deer will NOT eat these which is a plus. My yard deer eat everything but never touch these. I see many make the mistake and plant the smaller emerald arborvitae and deer will eat the lower 5ft of those immediately which defeats the screening purpose.

  3. We’re on 2+ acres so I have quite a few GG Arbs in places where they can spread out but honestly we’re older so I don’t think I’ll ever see them get as tall as you say they get. If someone needs the kind of privacy these Green giant give, but don’t have the space to let them get wide then try the American Pillar Full Speed a Hedge arbs. They stay narrow, but get tall. The only problem I have is keeping the deer from rutting on them and breaking branches.

  4. Oh Jim and community pls I need your expert opinions! I have some green giant and also some junior giants which are doing well and have space, however the opposite side of my property I planted Leylands that weren’t trimmed in the green growth over the years thus have become brown through the middle, I had them limbed up to 4 ft since old trumpet vines were growing on them ( I actually did successfully kill the trumpet vines and they haven’t grown back) but now I’m wondering if I should have leylands removed and green giants put in their place OR if Jim or any of you have alternative suggestions I’d love to hear them – I’m WAY too close to neighbors with parties and tons of kids and cigarettes and all the awful thing 😢! I’m not moving lol, the Leylands were good for a dozen years but now not so much! Oh the never ending privacy screen struggles for neighborhoods 😅! I was thinking of limelight hydrangeas however my neighbors have an above ground pool AND a second story on the house and a high deck 😮😮😢…HELP!

  5. I used these to screen a neighbor’s barn. They are doing exactly what they are supposed to do. I love them. Planted them and staggered little gem magnolias for texture (leaf) contrast. I have no intention of pruning them. I’ll be dead before they reach 40 feet.

  6. I’ve only seen them listed as thuja plicata, not standishii x plicata. Thanks for the inside information!

  7. Happy New Year Jim & Steph. We planted 7 of these on the back line of our property to get privacy quick (from upside down houses overlooking our back yard & deck). Now, 12 years later, they are huge. Probably 40 ft tall and 12-15 wide. They smell incredible and are beautiful with snow. Ours don't off color hardly ever and stay a beautiful green. When we planted them no one had these, now they are everywhere. We are zone 7a (Montauk NY) and they shrug off salt, wind & ice. For the right place they are fantastic.

  8. I live in Youngville, NC. I have 8 of them about 6 feet tall. The deer pull the branches off and chew on the bark. Because of that they look horrible. I'm probably going to replace them with something more deer resistant. Absolutely love HortTube! TY

  9. You know Jim, I once saw a 20 foot tall person. I stayed clear of that guy! 🤣Great review, I totally enjoyed. I have one and only one that I planted early 2020. It was roughly 4 feet tall…it's now over 11 feet!!

  10. Thuja is one of the very few genus names that has no alternate in any country or North and South US alternate.
It is thoo-ya in every single country

  11. OK definably not applicable to my need but do they have a smaller version? 20 ft by 15 ft great. Need to block prying eyes of HOA from my back yard.
