My wife and I gave out these plants at our wedding, they were tiny then. My wife’s grandfather took care of this one for 8 years and it is massive now. He gave it to us recently as a gift. When he gave it to us the soil appeared to have mold on the top. So, I tried to remove as much of it as I could. I’m worried that I’m not properly caring for it and I want to make sure it survives.

My wife waters it around once a week and it currently has a brief period of direct morning light and then indirect light through the afternoon. The windows in the room are east facing. We only have east and north facing windows in our apartment. Her grandfather said he watered it like a desert plant, heavily once a month or so. We live in a more humid and temperate area than he does however.

He was watering it correctly. You should wait until it’s completely dried out and then soak it fully with water then leave it alone until it dries out again. Overwatering is the easiest way to kill a succulent imo.

It sounds like that’s the best light you’re going to get as well. A south facing window would be ideal, but I saw you said that wasn’t an option. I’d put it as close to the window as you can, because they do like a good amount of light throughout the day. Looks healthy though, I hope I can get mine to that size someday.
