How can I get this plant to grow outwards and not just straight up? Thank you!

Give it a teaspoon of Gypsum & pinch of Bone Meal.
Then light on the nodes, rather than the leaves.
Sulfur proteins need to be stimulated in the dormant nodes before they will grown.
Light on the young leaves, keeps the nodes dormant.

Do you mean you want it to be more “bushy ” ?

Position the light directly above the plant and he will grow straight up

Take a look at Jade Bonsai pruning tutorials on YouTube. They need to be pruned back completely almost every year. Each time you clip a branch it’ll trigger the branch to fork. It’s really wild. I’m working on one right now. Don’t be afraid to take the clippers to it. One it has a nicely thick stalk/stem it’ll tough it up through prunings.

Anywho if that’s what you are looking for , you will have to start pruning and trimming from the top . Just a few pieces no more every couple months or so . It will start to branch out from the sides .it will take time to enjoy the journey.

Mine just tipped over and did it by itself! 😆

More light! Jade really needs sun, but at least put it in front of a window. At very least, it needs a grow light.

Strategic pruning will allow for shaping a jade. It does take time and patience though, they don’t put out new growth all that quickly. I’ve marked up your photo to show growth pattern and how to cut.

The red arrows show how the leaves grow in pairs at each node on the stem, and the pairs alternate direction, so that the next pair of leaves is perpendicular to the previous one.
The blue marks are “cuts”. If you cut the plant on the stem at this point, then two growth points would grow at the base of each leaf, in the direction of that leaf pair. So if you cut the first location you’d eventually have two shoots growing in the direction of the yellow lines. This means if the leaves are pointing so one is up and the other is down (right side cutting example), you’ll have a new forked stem with the new branches going up and down. If you cut the other location though, you’d have two branches growing left and right, or horizontally. Each time you cut the stem two growth points form. Cutting at the stem where the leaves point horizontally, over and over again as each new branch grows out, will make a bushier, horizontally growing plant. This works better if you have a strong grow light for the plant. If it’s too dark, it will grow more unpredictably as it reaches for light. The space between leaves will be long and spindly. So bushy plant – needs plenty of light. I hope my little diagrams make sense. Good luck!

cut the side growth off, stick it back in the pot and put it under a grow light

Cut it between 2 nodes wherever you want it to start branching out more. Then you can propagate the piece(s) cut off if you want. Cut branches or stems back every few months to promote more bushy growth, since wherever you make the cut on the plant, it will typically always branch out on both sides of the cut spot and grow out from where the leaves are. I prune mine often, like every few weeks lol, and it’s thriving 🙌

  11. Looks like it’s searching for light. If you want it to grow upwards and don’t want to move it, i suggest a grow light

It’s growing towards the light, so you can cut it and turn it every few weeks to evenly distribute the light

Wait about 10 years it will get there
