We have created a playlist of all the crops featured in this week’s video, so that you can learn about growing them in more depth.
So you’ve decided to start a garden.Congratulations! But where do you start? What should you grow? Which plants grow well together? We know that when you’re starting out it can be confusing. That’s why we’ve created this video which uses three blueprints from our Garden Planner which show exactly which plants to grow and where to grow them, as well as how many of each will fit in the space. You can choose from a salad bed, a low-maintenance bed or a beginner garden bed with options warm crops – or you can do all three!

Brilliant to have so many blueprints. Always love your vids! Completely snowed under here in Virginia right now but spring – she is around the bend. I'm planting in the raised beds and up on the deck in boxes and pots. Giving up on the tomatoes in the ground. They either produce poorly or get eaten. Any suggestions for tomatoes in pots or in a greenstalk?
I find that woodlice are the worst pest for strawberries
Thanks Ben! The garden planner is really useful. I think I'll start my 3rd version tomorrow. Better 'drawing' many plans for the settings instead of lugging those heavy pots. Both this video and the former one with the 7 plants are a good help to start a vegetable garden.
Wood lice are a real pest
Awesome thx for the vid
I'm totally out of enthusiasm this year because last year was disastrous in terms of slugs. I tried everything, all the tips and tricks and old wives tales – constantly buying beer for beer traps over the year and even shelled out a fortune on copper rings which did absolutely nothing. The only thing we were lucky enough to get established was peas but everything else was decimated 2 or 3 successive plantings in a row. Any wildcard ideas that don't make the whole thing cost more than just buying the bloody vegetables from the supermarket instead before I just give up and resort to slug pellets??
Raspberries are ok, but they spead like mad and can take over
Ben can you do a show about trees and shurbs ! Maybe I missed one you did ! Thanks
What a fantastic video. Thank you for all that amazing information
Where do you find the type of trellis we seen on your first clip? I'd love some but not even sure how to call them.
Ben, what a beautiful garden you have..so clean, neat and organised.
Love to watch your videos❤
Ben, you are the most encouraging man alive. Thank you. Incidentally, this year, I'm turning to what's already a massive seed collection and just testing germination there. No giant seed order this year. Which, happily, is encouraged by Seed Savers' Exchange, celebrating its 50th anniversary, which is who I usually buy from.
A word about starting beans and peas indoors: as ever, this is climate-dependent. Here in the midwest, where hot dry summers mean slugs are a much smaller problem than in England, it's often a bit counterproductive to do that. Just bung them into the ground as soon it thaws and keep netting over the area till the plants are firmly established and got themselves leafing out well and wrapping themselves around poles. If you don't, it's not just slugs you'll need to worry about but all manner of rodents and birds.
A tip as well for raised beds if you're in an area with many burrowing creatures: lay 1/4" hardware cloth at the bottom. Roots get through, rodents don't.
Very Very nice ❤
You're a legend
This video has given me so many ideas 😊 I have a small growing area with 2 raised beds but have acquired 2 tower planters that are 2ft wide so will have more space to grow this year but was struggling with what to plant out, definitely will adapt these blueprints to my growing space ❤
Thanks so much for the video! Now I am sad. I set up 2 raised beds but have no greenhouse or place to grow seedlings. If anyone has advice, please let me know.
Good morning Ben, at times I feel like a new starting gardener for whatever you wish to plant. Planting out tomatoes and preparing the soil beforehand, it's like starting out for the first time. Yet, no matter what you sow, mostly we are rewarded with good harvests. Love your zucchini plants, trying to get yellow variety seeds but no luck thus far. Thank you for sharing good and trusted information with us to avoid the pitfalls. We do not have a normal veggie garden this season because of the severe drought and the sun was just beating down and burning off many plants. It seems to be getting a bit better, I might have to throw some bean seeds into buckets and hope for a good harvest. Never give up and always keep trying. Enjoy a most rewarding day with a cup of tea or more. Many blessings until the next video. Kind regards.
Thank you! This is so useful
Any suggestions for where to start your garden if you don't already have a huge greenhouse?
Not exactly convenient to take up half the kitchen all winter
Such good information, this is almost excactly how i started in my first garden
Hi, love the videos, just a quick question. Where can i get those curved plant supports you have, it would be a great way for me to grow beans by my chicken run, thanks
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm American. Even just having your vids on as background noise, it's like I've found the David Attenborough of gardening. Love your channel!
Again a superb video! Such a joy when your videos are posted!
What type of dog 🐕 do you have.
Our raised beds are very tall, considering the fact that we in the family all suffer from back problems. Your raised beds aren't raised at all for us.😂😂 love your videos, they're always fun and very instructive.
Awesome advice Ben for starting a new garden. Its always nice when channels contains this sort of information. Great video
I resisted gardening all my life until two years ago when I was very ill. For some reason, gardening popped into my head and I started off with growing herbs. I was instantly hooked and amazed at how therapeutic it was.
I love your videos, Ben – your enthusiasm is catching! I also just want to say how generous you are – providing a free book, and a trial of your planner without having to input card details. I have downloaded your book and have been reading it. You explain things clearly and easily. I will be purchasing your planner.
Thank you so much for the excellent work you do! It is very much appreciated.
I love these videos. 😊there's so much to learn and try still. There's always room to grow no matter how long you've been gardening😊
Thank you for not making payment details a requirement.
I had a disastrous year last year when my raised beds were the target of rats, they ate everything, it was soul destroying and has made me wonder if its worth trying again this year. do you have any ideas how to deter them?
There’s so much to know about gardening, and at times it can feel overwhelming as a beginner. I appreciate channels like yours to help us on our journey. Newbies gather here! ❤🌱
these blueprints are very helpful. Are they templates in the garden planner tool?
Thanks Ben, you’re always an inspiration 🙏
Hi i recently bought some organic compost in 1tonne bags thats jet black like yours, no worms, looks dead. Should compost be black?
You make everything sound good. I hope I'm good as you some day. Bye!
Great video! Please could you tell me where your garden arches are from? Thanks
Ben, please help!
I planted onions in plug trays on boxing day using a heat mat, 3 per plug. When they got to about 2 inches tall I pricked them out into individual plugs.
It's been a couple days and a lot of them are still flopped over and aren't standing up again, did I do something wrong? I'm new to gardening but I am really keen!
Excited for the new planting season! Keep up the great videos!
At the end of the season in 2023, I had maybe 5 zucchini that had grown to the monster size. I picked them and just put them on an inside shelf to either eat or give to the chickens. I always heard that zucchini don't keep well but they stayed edible almost until the end of winter. Have you tried that? I was wondering if it was just a fluke.
Thanks for much for the garden planner free trial. Chatted with a friendly associate about our slug problem. They are the bane of my brassicas.
