I have a weird strip of my backyard that is melted, but snow everywhere else. What could cause this?

Utility or water line underneath the ground. Don’t go punching deep holes to find out.

I see a corner of an AC unit. It could be the heat exchance return from home to unit for cooling…

Sun is reflecting off a window. Just like a magnifying glass on ants.

Call 811 and have them flag your yard. More than likely you have lines there.

What utilities are in that little shed thing?

Could be an underground electrical line that isn’t buried deep enough. Electricity running through wires causes heat, especially if the power line isn’t of a large enough gauge. Could also be a sewer lateral line that is shallow. As others have said, request an 811 utilities locate to see if your power line isn’t here.

Sun reflecting off of something throughout the day, this trail shows the path of the reflection

Where the dog dragged its butt across the lawn.

Flagstones from previous path. Grass has grown over them.

  11. Could this be the dripline for the trees above. Snowmelt dripping water from trees?

  12. Does the shed have electric range from the house out to it and was it a direct bury of the line? Could be heat from the wires melting the snow from underground since the wire could generate some heat

I find it odd that it is curved in a fairly uniform pattern. That leads me to believe that maybe a reflection is a higher possibility than a utility line.

Low-E windows are directing concentrated sunlight onto the yard. Look at that arc, just like the sun’s movement in the sky.

It’s gotta be some type of underground utility line as others have said

Could be a focused reflection off a window. Seems to follow a round rotational path like the earth rotating.

Utilities or something is reflecting the sun onto the ground over the course of the day like a window

Do you have pipes or utilities going to
    That shed?

  19. Most likely a buried weeper. Warm melt off from the roof draining into an underground run off pipe would be my guess.

Is there a pipe hooked up to your downspouts anywhere?

This is the most random post I’ve ever seen in this sub

You’ve got a draintile wrapped in rock just below the soil surface.

  23. Dig a deep hole across it and see who calls. You’ll have your answer.

  24. Did you roll up a huge snowball to make the base of a snowman?

  25. sowhat_sewbuttons

Damn, I really wanted it to be a HUGE fairy circle .

Could be someone rolled a snowball.

I did this once walking home from school, stopped and rolled a big snow ball in a random neighbours front yard.

Found out later they called the municipality about the snowless space left in the yard.

  27. Kids shoveled a path to the shed to do nefarious things

You can see the reflection of the sun from a window or something in the path it looks like on the 2nd photo. My guess is that you have good windows that reflect the sun lol.

I can’t make certain due to the picture, but this looks to be a low lying section of your yard in comparison to the rest of it. If it is, then the snowmelt channels here and creates moving water; this would be why you see this.

I love when it snows here (which isn’t often at all)… it’s a telling story of roof insulation, shaded areas, and water movement when it starts melting. If I were a contractor looking for work I would be visiting places where the snow is melting and take pictures of the differences between yards to sell services.
