I was buying succulents online and saw they had air plants too. I got this Tillandsia tricolor var. melanocrater specifically because it was one of the few that didn’t say it was “enhanced” with color. This is definitely painted right?

This definitely looks painted – tricolor is a species that will naturally blush red when exposed to good light so you’ll get a much deeper natural red color as we get closer to summer. That little amount of paint won’t hurt it a bit either. Still a bit dishonest to not mention it in the listing though.

Yeah, unfortunately. I have a brachy that had painted tips like that. I was able to remove most of it, but only to discover that the tips were completely brown under the paint. It’s still recovering, poor guy. I hate when they do that!

    Agreeing with everyone, it’s painted.
It might peel off after a water soak, but it might not. I’m not sure what paint they used

Enhanced means colored but it isn’t necessarily bad for it. Quality greenhouses will use a dye that isn’t harmful to the plant. I have a couple that are about 5 years old and are fine. They’ve flowered and have started turning into clumps, so the old dyed leaves are starting to die back
