Hi all,

Perth, Australia.

I'm having difficulty identifying what this is in my lawn. Someone suggested that this is NOT kikuyu, however, I found a lot of pictures that look exactly like this and says they are Kikuyu. How do I distinguish between Kikuyu and crabgrass?

Thanks a lot in advance.

  1. I saw your other post on this topic a while back. I thought you had it sorted haha.

Have you dug down gently to the small plants that look the same around these ones? If they are linked by a rhizome it can’t be crab grass/crows foot because they apparently don’t produce rhizomes.

Is any of it producing seed heads? Because that would make an id easier.

I’m more of a cool season grass guy so I couldn’t say for sure, I initially though it looked like kikuyu but i don’t have any experience with crows foot/crab grass so I’m not sure.

I can say with 100% certainty that it’s not any type of crabgrass.

Its a toss up between kikuyu and goosegrass, which I believe you guys call crowsfoot.

    I’m leaning heavily towards goosegrass/crowsfoot.

The 2 biggest reasons for that are:

    * the stems seem to originate from a few central points. As in, this is a bunch-type grass. Kikuyu is creeping type grass.
    * it looks like it has a membranous ligule, which if true is a slam dunk for goosegrass.

I circled what appears to be the membranous ligule in the screenshot below. If I’m right, it should be a white/semi-transparent film-like sheet, like soft wax paper, that sits under the leaf. In contrast, kikuyu’s ligule would consist of tiny hairs, no paper.
