January is a quiet time in the garden, and not much is growing. And whilst it is too early to sow many crops, there are actually lots of seeds we CAN get sowing this month to get a good head start on the growing season! Our fingers are itching to get sowing down at the allotment with those January blues setting in.
Here are some things I’m sowing in the month of January, which I think you should too!
Bare in mind though that the things in my list should be started off at home or in a greenhouse. It’s too early to be direct sowing outdoors in most cases in January, as the ground will be too cold or frozen!
I’m starting some of these tender crops off at home under my grow lights and the hardier crops in my unheated greenhouse. It will be April at the very earliest when I start to move some of the tender crops down to the allotment greenhouses and polytunnels.

Anyone who gets so excited about growing food deserves our likes 😊
I sowed lettuce in January they went to seed so I just have to wait a wee while yet
In the transcript it says you are sowing jeans…. now that is great! 😂
Great video concise & straightforward. Will get sowing now . Thankyou 😊
Thanks for the inspiration
What happens when seed trays freeze, like mine have as greenhouse Isn't heated.
Head's up Jim re toms, Yes they do tend to be quick. I have preserved the seeds from various toms and they were great indoor, outside never fare well luv n light x
I’m starting more seeds now. Still have rainbow shard, spinach and lettuce growing almost finished though
what is fail proof tomatoes and sweetest one's too, thankyou 😊
Hi Jim, nice and helpful video as always. Any chance you could make a video about using a heating mat/propagator please? Any suggestions about LED lights for those without south facing windows? Cheers!
Do you have a cold greenhouse ?
This is all very good info but we should relay be using heritage seeds. Because we can save the seeds the plants produce, for next year. Saving money all round.
Hi Jim I really like your videos. I'm thinking of growing more vegetables this year.
Just found your channel 😁 moved North (W Yorks) from the SE a year ago so last summer I just had some tomatoes in pots and strawberries but now my veg patch is organised and will be getting a polythene greenhouse so I've been planning my planting 😁😁 definitely won't be planting any tomatoes till April! Didn't know I could sew peppers so early and I'm trying aubergine for the first time this year so I'm excited to get started!! Think I'll wait a bit longer though till Feb as my only south facing Windowsill is in my kitchen and it gets quite chilly in there. I love growing fruit and veg! So satisfying eating something you grew yourself!
Do you get any pests, my carrots, beets, got eaten by squirrals my courgettes were nimbled at too, I seem to get more green leaves and no fruit? 🤷🏼♀️
Lo veré en julio…
i try very hard to not grow F1s. They are no good to keep seeds, and end up meaning that we wont have so many varieties and will be completely reliant on the big corporations.
I run scared of planting the fools crop…. planting too early and loosing it all. Start again in april
You can use toilet or kitchen roll tubes as root trainers and just plant the whole thing.
Do you run a 12/12 light cycle or a 18/6 for your grow lights
Its still totally Dark and cold here in Denmark so you have to be very optimistic to start already – but of course a greenhouse helps very much – so good luck to all of the eager gardeners beginning as early as possible 🎶🖤🎵🐦⬛🍀💚
Leeks and broad beans ( I missed the October sowing window) as well as onions (went in boxing day) but will try lettuce, spinach and some brassicas now after watching :-).
My best harvest of tomatoes were sown in January. They were producing in June like in Spain. But I live in London so the risk of frost is much earlier than other parts of the country.
Brilliant video Jim 🎉 I’m from NW 🇬🇧 too, been on my allotment waiting list 6 loooonnngggg years 🤞 I know where to come when I get it x Kim x
Very inspirational Jim. I dont normally sow my seeds until March as im also in the North west of England, but youve inspired me to try a few in January….. Plus 58k views – amazing 🤩😊
New to greenhouse gardening this will be my first year. Decided to try a greenhouse as the weather last year was pants for growing outside here in Scotland, didn’t really have much success at all. I’ve already planted up my onion sets in October + garlic which is coming up already. Got all my seeds ready to go will be looking to get some started this month after watching your video thank you. All the best for 2025 🎉 happy growing folks
Thanks for the vid, onions in along with wild garlic, loads of hedgerow seeds such as Blackthorn and Hawthorn and willow cut and transplanted for fencing.
It's important to stay busy in winter I think.
