The History of the Palm House
Even during a frosty winter, you can feel as if you’re in a tropical jungle or a hot desert here. Couples arrange romantic dates, teachers bring their students for nature lessons, and parents show their children translucent fish and colorful parrots. The Poznań Palm House is celebrating its 110th birthday this April!

It All Started with a Garden Nursery
It began with a garden nursery established in the area of today’s Wilson Park. Then, in 1903, a public botanical garden was created. A year later, the garden was expanded with the addition of greenhouses and a Japanese house. Although it wasn’t yet a true palm house, everything was moving in that direction.

Between 1910 and 1911, in preparation for the East German Exhibition, the first Palm House building was constructed. It officially opened on April 1, 1911—exactly 110 years ago. By early May, with the opening of the Exhibition, crowds of visitors began to flock to the Palm House. At that time, the main building was a pavilion topped with a domed glass roof, adjacent to greenhouses that housed a collection of cacti.
