Live in Charlotte, NC and our backyard has dirt/mud spots in the backyard. What would be the best way to have grass grow there? Is there a certain type of grass seed that would work best? The backyard isn’t entirely shaded but can be in during certain times as there are 2 large trees behind the fence line

I just redid my entire front lawn and side lawns in October. Also in Charlotte, NC. I tilled up the areas and mixed in some top soil. If you’re close to Indian Trail, you can run by Ewing Outdoor Supply for seed. I used Empro King Tall Fescue seed.

Biggest thing to pay attention to is using the proper seed rate for your spreader and also water. Water way more than you think. I did 3 30minute sprinkler sessions a day for almost 3 weeks (my monthly water bill was almost triple the average bill, but it was totally worth it since I don’t have bermuda grass anymore). Also try to keep people or animals off it, if you have wildlife or dogs around.

I’m not super versed in spring time seeding so I won’t throw out any suggestions for that, there’s probably much more qualified people that can help with that. If you’re willing to wait until next fall though, the above would be my suggestion.

    Hope that helps.
