In this noisy age, having a special place in nature to feel calm, to be able to reflect, mediate, even pray, can be hard to find. In 7 Steps to My Mary Garden/Part 1 Plan and Prepare, you follow how I learned about a Mary Garden, and the outline I used to develop the Mary Garden in my yard. The garden is designed as a small space with two key features – it is more private, protected from all the noise and activities around us, and it has a representation of Mary, the mother of Jesus. This is the first of a two part video series about developing and living with a Mary Garden, and covers a brief background of this type of sacred garden design, shows the simple garden plan I sketched out, the list of plants I am using, and the beginning preparation of the 14 ft long X 12 ft wide garden bed for the garden’s flowers, herbs, and shrubs. The garden design outline can be used to develop a special space for your yard that provides you with a calming environment, free of the daily stresses of life, where you may choose to pause, reflect, contemplate, and pray. If this type of garden interests you, where do you think you might develop it? Or, do you have a special spot in your yard that is similar? Share your Comments below. Subscribe @gardenyay

I love having my Mary Garden outside my kitchen, and I find myself looking out at frequently during the day. It's become a centering, balancing spot in my busy days. And being able to easily access the garden brings balance and calm to the moments I can either go out and be in it, or look out, pause, and reflect on how my day is going and how I am feeling.
