My friend was struggling to keep her spider plant healthy and had noticed a huge decline in growth. So i took it in to rehab it a bit, as she has indoor cats and couldn't monitor it inside. I've mostly had it inside getting a good amount of indirect light.
Anyway. I watched some YT vids that encouraged me to prune when needed and i definitely overdid it. All of the leaves were droopy, wilted, and i suspected that some had infection so i panicked and snipped it all, obviously…
Just took it out the pot and sprayed off the roots, wanted to take a look to see how healthy they were. They look great, so what's next? Should i trim the
roots up and repot in a smaller pot? Place in water? Repot in large pot bc of the root size?
I am trying to stay optimistic, reading that these guys are resilient as heck and can bounce back fast, but obviously wanna do the right next step.
I'm not sensitive so criticism and comments and concerns welcome, but i already feel bad enough so no need to kick me while im down 😔
Second photo was after its first minor prune once i got it, it kinda declined after that too which led me to the big chop.

And you can laugh. Those monster roots being attached to a little sprout is cracking me up thru the stress 😂
No matter how bad you feel, never trim your own bangs.
Oh my god this is so silly, I love it, probably trim a little bit of the excess roots off and place in water

Looks like bean sprouts
You UNDER-PRUNED it, I still see green!
In my experience they love it when you just completely cut off all leaves and let them grow back over a few weeks. They look way better than before
If the spider plant is well rooted, I’ve cut off all of the leaves completely off to where there is no green and in a few days it started sprouting leaves again
We left a spider plant in pitch black, ice cold room for 7 months, then when we found it again the thing looked dead.
Trimmed it back to soil and within like 2 weeks, he was green again lol I don’t think they can be killed…
What do you MEAN the leaves were DROOPY? It’s a spider plant. They DO that.
This did nothing but make me angry. You people take your spider plants for granted. I cant even grow mines. And you have the nerve to slice it to death while i cant even grow mines? Actually, just give me yours. GIVE IT!!
You have a viable rhizome and nothing to lose :). Pot it up and don’t overwater.
On the plus side, your roots look really healthy…
It’s ok fren! 🫂 One of the reasons why it’s struggling is that the pot is too big. They have a shallow root structure and too much soil means the soil stays wet and the roots stay dry. Then the wet soil increases the risk of fungal infection or root rot. Try a bit of superthrive for recovery. Once stable repot in Fox Farms Ocean Forest or Happy Frog. Hopefully it bounces back. You had good intentions. You can also buy her a new one if the situation arises. ☺️
It took me 5 whole minutes to understand what happened here and once I did… holy wow
