In this video, I share 4 winter garden tasks every gardener should do each winter instead of waiting for spring. When winter arrives, most gardeners garden less or stop gardening altogether and push these critical tasks until the new season. This is a mistake and will set you up for problems in your spring garden. Do these winter gardening tasks now, don’t wait for spring!

Darn I messed up with pulling the weeds ☹. Oh Dale, you're such a fashionable guy 🍌🍌🍌
I am working on stuff like that and making some progress. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone.
Another reason to cover your raised bed soil, squirrels! They were digging in my empty beds so I grabbed tarps and covered to keep them out.
Can you help me to choose ground covering for the soil in my backyard? I live in Central Valley, California. Zone 9.Now I already see thousands of weeds coming out from the bear soil, after watching this video , I realize it is time to get rid of the weeds and cover the ground. My location do get windy and dusty sometimes, I have dyed mulch in my front yard and there are tons of spider webs everywhere sometimes. So I am wondering if it is a good idea to use mulch in my backyard since spiders love the mulch. I think the problem is the weather is warm in the summer-this year reached 120 F😮 and it barely rain in the long summer, thus the moisture and dust would be trapped under the mulch.
So my question is, what kind of ground covering you think I should choose for my backyard for my circumstances? I was thinking about pine bark or pine needles
I have so much to do but doesn't have to be done but last season got away from me. I refuse to loose another.
Looking forward to that banana video.
Great info
Merry Christmas to all (especially Dale)!!! Would a 70% shade cloth work as a tarp over winter?
I brought in my potted cherry tomatoes a couple weeks ago, we were getting cold nights in high 20's and 30's. They did not like the
cold. I placed them in my front south facing window where they get sun. I planted them in September. I've already counted 6 tomatoes.
It's a large pot, I have about 10 plants and now they're growing all over my window. I think they're happy. I'm in the Mojave Desert of
California. Of course my pygmy goat is in the house with us as well. She's nice and toasty warm and spoiled. Have a great Christmas,
and a productive New Year.
Love the content; it's always helpful.
p.s. Love Dale too 🙂
Good suggestions
Fantastic content as usual though I especially loved Dale at the end! He is just adorable 😍
Why do you not grow in the hoop houses at this time and do you have any vids where you discuss what you plant and how early? Just added my first here in Charleston
Definitely going to cover my raised beds with cheap blue tarps (H F) will add 2-3 inches of mushroom compost and black cow. Question should I add some type of fertilizer also, if so what or should I wait until spring or do both times, thanks in advance
👍🏾👍🏾
Dale 🦮🍌he’s such a cutie and how he looks at you “ let me eat my food dad”😂
❤
Last two weeks consisted of these chores.
I just need to add mulch atop once the rain subsides.
Shredded leaves ready to broadcast.
Great tips. I need to take care of my dead tomato plants. The freeze came so quickly back in October this year. I was noticing there were a bunch of tomatoes on them. I love Mr. Dale’s banana pajama 🍌 He’s so cute!
Good vid. Also it is a good time to take a soil sample before the spring rush. Waters Labs works for me.
could i add compost to my container garden as well?
I love to let things go to seed (esp carrots, herbs, etc) because the wildlife, especially all my lizards, absolutely love using them as nurseries. But I'm torn because I have so many volunteers popping up EVERYWHERE. Being south of Houston on the coast, we still have our AC on at this point. So I can't really rely on the cold to kill them off.
I finally have tons of tomatoes ripening outside though, after completely failing with them because of the heat most of the year. Definitely excited about that!
my figs have been getting anthracnose fungus
Thanks to some volunteer Spoon Tomato plants that I let grow over 20 years ago I was able to collect their seeds and have been growing them since then. As far as I can tell Spoon Tomato seeds are no longer being sold.
The fruit juice pouring out the bucket and the one fruit escaping 😂😂
81 degrees here in Orlando…..definitely doesn't feel like Christmas LOL
Will mulching your raised beds create a haven for squash bugs and other pests that like to over winter in the garden??
MG can you do a video about how to rid of worms in stone fruits
The best time to start a garden was yesterday. The second best time is today! ❤🌱
Why using so many fertilizer on your plants
As always, great information and so helpful! One question I have is regarding the addition of compost. I'm in SW Ohio and plant a winter cover crop (oats) which seems to work great for helping to amend the soil and to keep out the unwanted weed seed, but have typically top dressed with compost in the late winter/early spring time frame. From what you said, which makes sense, it seems like I should have added the compost prior to planting the cover crop? Oh, and since I'm using a cover crop should I still tarp the beds after it's died off? Thanks!
I've had several frosts but my tomatoes and peppers r still not dead. I'm putting alfalfa pellets on my beds hopefully soon
Happy holidays I have a question if you or anyone can help me please feel free. My in-laws just moved from New York City to Richmond, Virginia. They are complaining because they left behind their cherry tree and their raspberry tree or blackberry. I’m not sure. Where can I order one that’s I can surprise then with, but it has to be a dwarf tree because they are older and will not be able to climb?
Can someone suggest what sand I should add to my bed to make it more loamy?
I can’t wait till spring. Winter is too boring 😑
