The kale doesn’t mind the cold too much. These pop-up greenhouse covers keep the snow and ice off. They don’t require any active heating most of the time.
I’m curious to hear your suggestions for keeping it a little warmer on single-digit temperature nights. Just enough to prevent frostbite on cold-hardy greens.
The inside temp in this enclosure got as low as 2F on Dec. 23rd and some of the kale leaves sustained a bit of damage. The dark purple kale didn’t seem to mind though; all the leaves are fine!
I was thinking of trying some seedling heat mats around the sides or hanging from the top bar.

Heat mats can help, or a n electric radiator heater on a thermostat set to wherever you’d like.

Insulating will largely help to keep costs down.
