The Best Garden in San Francisco!

The oldest public Japanese garden in the entire country is right here in San Francisco at Golden Gate Park.

The garden started as a “Japanese Village” attraction in the 1894 California Midwinter Exposition, whose exhibits attempted to represent world cultures, and after the fair most of the structures were destroyed.

But the brainchild of the exhibit hired Makoto Hagiwara, a Japanese landscape architect, to care for the gardens, and he did so while living in the gardens for the next 30 years until his death.

During WWII the architects family was forced into an internment camp and much of the garden was again destroyed. It wasn’t until after Japan and the U.S. reached a peace agreement in the 1950s that the garden was redesignated as the Japanese Tea Garden, after which time the area was painstakingly restored over several decades.

Tours of the garden are free and its definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a fun outdoor activity.
