I am a first year Turf Management and Landscape Design teacher at a high school with little experience in either subjects. I am definitely a beginner. We have an old football field no longer in use right outside my classroom and I would love to use it to teach the students how to maintain a lawn and any other things related to landscape design.
I do not know the grass type but we are in central Alabama. There is what I assume to be crabgrass growing all along the perimeter and a some on the main field. (Photo for reference)
We have some but not much equipment (zero turn mower, weed whackers, pressure washers) and I have $900 of class money I can spend and would like to use it for projects related to the field.
I guess my questions are what would you suggest I begin teaching them and what equipment would I need? How can I kill the weeds but grow the lawn? When should I begin the weed killing and fertilizer process? Any other helpful tips are greatly appreciated.
