Will old seeds grow? Starting Seedling Basics – Texas Organic Gardening. I don’t normally start plants indoors from seed, just direct sowing into raised beds or large containers, but wanted to experiment with it this year. February is late for starting seedlings in Austin, TX – usually we want to do that around Christmas or January 1st. I already have some plants out in the raised beds – will go over that in one of the next videos, just wanted to share how these 4 year old seeds did.

  1. Growing up, we had a root cellar and I remember seeds that germinated 5 years past their "packed for year" date. They had very high germination rates as well so if you store them in a cool dry place they should store well for several years. Probably not a lot of basements in Texas, though, so having something like a root cellar is probably uncommon there?
