  1. Great episode! That was actually a good bag of black kow. The ones I've seen had so many rocks and wood chips and sand that the bags of died mulch looked like a better compost. Theres some videos on youtube ive seen a year or 2 ago were people used black kow and got unfinished compost in their bulk purchase of it and it destroyed the majority of their plants within weeks of use.

    (Edit, typo)

  2. I've been researching compost and making my own soil for container gardening. From what I've gathered, there is NO commercially available compost that can pass the 1/4" screening test, because of all of the fillers. The best I've seen is about 20% by volume wood chip filler with a 1/8" screening test….

  3. It’s very simple solution, don’t buy that garbage from stores, boycott, and they will either fix their product or go out of business for scamming customers. Make your own compost/soil.

  4. UK compost is garbage too nowadays. Peat has been banned as a result quality has plummeted and prices doubled. Make your own people

  5. I dump leaves in the fence row behind my house. Underneath is a lot of good fertile soil The problem is all the weed seeds. How do I sterilize this soil so I can use it?

  6. SERIOUSLY HELP. I fill 4 of your garden bed with black kow, miracle grow garden soil, coco coir, perlite, vermiculite. IS my garden not going to produce? I planted my first ever garlic in this with your bulb + fertilizer and trifecta.

  7. heh, that's why just buy fresh cow manure from cattle farms. It'll be hot "way to high in nitrate and greens" when you get it, so you will have to run it through your compost piles first, but you can guarantee it's true manure and not a bag of wood chips.

  8. 12:37 If you "never thought it was this bad", and you've been doing it for as long as you have, you must have not been paying any attention while using it, never looked into it(videos exist showing the exact same thing for at least 3 to 5 years), and never ever sifted a bag…..

  9. I stopped buying black cow four years ago, when I purchased several bags and found it had "Lots" of sand. I don't want any sand in my garden. And I sure don't want to pay premium prices for sand.

  10. I ordered horse manure pellets two years ago and I was happy with the product. I only grow on a balcony in containers so I can pay the premium price. I was happy with the product and it was also aged properly. I was also happy with the horsy smell (only when planting!) because it brought me memories from when I was riding as a small girl… I was amazed when I found earthworms too from my containers! I had only used store bought bagged soil, horse manure pellets and worm castings. I grew everything from seed so the worms really were born at my place😊

  11. I just sifted about 35 kilos of humus. Best thing ever for our garden. We only use our kitchen scraps, chicken coop bedding and weeds or anything that comes from the garden. We do it the lazy way with the help of worms and that's it. Black gold.

I also get rabbit manure from our bunnies, which our tomatoes love. We are able to get very good sheep manure that we get to use in our garden beds.

  12. I totally respect that MI love and live by good business practices! We should all expect more from businesses, and be more selective.

  13. I see the same issue with seed starting soil. Chunks of wood so big they don't fit in the cells of the seedling trays.

  14. I have never ever found a compost in any bag or in bulk that did not have wood chips, didn't matter whether is was cow or chicken

  15. Just getting started in the world of gardening. This is outrageous !!! This year I purchased compost from my local garden center. It looked pretty good, but in the spring, I’ll have to test it before buying my large load. Thank you for everything you are teaching us Luke.❤

  16. Beware composted manure from big box stores. Some has graze all which will kill all your plants.

  17. Now ive seen other gardeners swear on wood mulch to break down into soil n make there soil better over time

  18. I Want to put in my word for mushroom soil. The 3 cubic yards I got this summer were fantastic. Even though it wasn't fully broken down yet, it was great stuff. I did an experiment. In a very poor soil area that grows nothing but grass and weeds, I dug a little 6 inch deep trench and filled it with the mushroom soil. I planted a row of peas in August for a fall crop. Those Alaska peas are supposed to top out at about 3 feet tall, but they grew to the top of my 6 foot fence and were still growing when the freeze got them here in PA. I ordered 3 more cubic yards of it and hopefully it will mature over the winter. The first 3 yards were used to fill my new garden beds.
