Hey hey, garden gals and guys! In this video, I’m transplanting up my Lisianthus seedlings that I started in a pinch in Ocean Forest Potting Soil…they’ve since struggled a bit and I’ve decided to pot them up at 4.5 weeks old into cell trays to give them a lift! Last year, I had immense success doing this, so I’m giving it a go again. Fair warning, I DO find it more difficult this year because the soil blocks are more breakable because there is chunky debri and the seedlings are smaller to handle, BUT I do manage to get it done.

You’ll see I’m also feeling rather chatty and high energy (which is rare being almost 25 weeks pregnant with twins), so while I have left over soil, I add more water and bust out soil blocks with Vermont Compost Company Fort Vee Potting Mix. I was instantly reminded why I had REALLY good luck with this soil last year for soil blocking…it was much easier to work with than the Foxfarm’s Coco Loco and wool pellets; however, that being said, I do NOT sift Coco Loco as recommended, so maybe that’s the difference. But it’s convenient I can skip that step with Vermont Compost Company.

Furthermore, my Snapdragons I started in the Coco Loco with wool pellets do not have a very high germination at this point. I’m not sure if that’s the soil recipe or the deal with Snapdragons this year as I’ve heard others are having a tough year with Johnny’s Seeds Snapdragons as well. The jury is still out on that.

Either way, we eventually finish both projects and I’m pleased the Lisis are off to a better life now (so far, so good!). I CANNOT wait for their blooms again this year!

Please comment below and let me know how your Lisianthus are coming along, your preferred soil blocking recipe and any YouTuber or TV recommendations for when I slow down here at the end of my pregnancy!

  1. I enjoyed seeing your lisianthus and happy that you gave some. I am very excited about growing Corelli Sugoi lisianthus this year. If you Google it, there is a 59-second YouTube video by American Takii showing them. Sugoi means awesome in Japanese. There are 5 colors in the mix this year. I am also growing Shallot Green, Voyage Champagne 2 and 3, First Love, Ophira, Chaconne Apricot and Purple, Solo mix and Solo white ( Solo is pollenness and earlier to bloom), ABC mix and Voyage 2 mix. I did pot up a couple of weeks ago to a full sized 36 cell flat. ( I think that you put too much soil in your 36 Burpee container before you moved them.) Currently, I have over 320 lisianthus, which I will share with my sister. They look like they are big enough that they will make it. I am feeding them with Fox Farm liquid fertilizer because it doesn't have a bad smell. I do water from the bottom but do mist because lisianthus want high humidity. As far as YouTube videos to watch, one of my favorite is Janey with DigPlantWaterRepeat. She is a physical therapist who had a hard time in 2020 and found respite in her small California zone 9 garden. She decided in November 2021 to give Youtube a try and started part-time. Since that time, she began working to produce 5 videos a week, which meant she turned that into a full-time job. She also partners with Proven Winners. In August, she and her family bought a home in the country with a neglected yard. Even though she is in a different zone, her videos are so enjoyable. Check out her nursery tour in Oregon at a 4 generation family farm last Friday, which was so fun to watch. Also, because of Janey, I started watching Hello Garden youtube by Kate, a garden designer from Seattle who loves plants too. It's fun to watch other parts of the country. I'm hoping that you take the time to rest. As far as names, I rode the school bus with Veronica. How about Veronica and Violet? Can you tell I'm obsessed with plants? Have a great week!

  2. Have have a granddaughter due in July. 😊 Some names I’ve seen on Etsy looking for a custom item are Juniper and Willow? Something botanical/floral maybe?

  3. I’m starting seeds as I watch this! Tomatoes, alyssum, celosia, basil, and calendula 🥰 This morning I refreshed my planters with compost and mycorrhizae in the snow! 😝

  4. Hello. I have been following along on your Lisianthus journey and am right there withyou. You inspired me to try again because they r so hard to grow. I also need to up plant them. Good luck to us both. P.S. i cant wait to hear on the girls name that u pick.

  5. i almost gave birth to my twins at 31 weeks… because i was alone and painting my appartment loll be careful babe especially with twins ❤

  6. This is my 2nd year using Vermont compost in soil blocks, really great. Price was cheaper for 5 bags at Gardeners Supply (free shipping) than Amazon. Happy planting!

  7. I really hope all of your lisianthus make it! They really are so lovely.

Also, I applaud you on being ahead of things with the fungus gnats. They’ve been such a pain in my side this growing cycle!!

Baby girl names: Elizabeth or Eliza/Liza with the nickname Lizzie (like lisies that take 8-9 months to grow and are a painstaking process) 😅 and Natalie (like the dahlia Sweet Natalie)

  8. Had great germination with my lizzies, but i removed the cover to soon and let them dry out, my mistake , I've lost majority of them 😕

  9. Your lizzies look great! I have too found that potting up makes a big difference. I ended up with around 200, 2 successions because I kept buying more seeds, lol. 1 succession is out (PNW 8b), covered with frost cloth when it’s raining so that they won’t drown. The other ones I just potted up, and are doing ok but are tiny! I have NO idea how many I have of each, let’s just say there was an issue with my name tags. Respect to you for keeping track so well! I won’t know until the pretty babies bloom (fingers crossed).

  10. Maybe don’t fill the cell trays all the way? Allow enough room to plop the tiny blocks on top. The con is that you have to carefully fill in around each one

  11. How funny we have all the same varieties. The champagne I had the worst germination. I started mine Feb 5th which for my zone was about 6-8 weeks late. 😂 (zone 10b)

  12. I grew lisianthus for the first time last year and am totally addicted. I probably went a bit overboard this year. I think I have ~700 soil blocks filled with thriving starts that I started 12/17. They’re doing beautifully and I’m excited to get planted out, but not 100% sure where they’re all going yet lol!!!! I’m just a little home Gardner who love watching toooooo many YouTubers ha ha. I love B&B even more so because she’s a “neighbor” in my town in Denver, Colorado. I’m happy I discovered your channel today. You’re adorable and I love your energy. What a fun mom you’re going to be! Thank you for sharing ❤

  13. Thank you Steph!! Your energy!! God bless 😊 Got me Geo Seed order Thursday. Alleluia!! Planted lissies and snaps yesterday!! Woohoo!

  14. I had the same issue with mold as you. I didn’t start over and yours are bigger than mine. I moved mine to 2 72 cell trays and I’m almost afraid to check on them. Fingers crossed they start to grow well soon.

  15. If you have the 2” soil blocker you can take the 3/4” insert out and use it to press holes into the soil in the seed trays.

  16. I used coco loco this year to pot up in 2" inch soil blocks, but I'm not liking it as the Vermont compost . The coco loco is falling apart and dries out faster. I originally used a bag of Fort Vee Vermont compost in my 3/4" soil blocks and they did great. Hopefully they do okay in the Coco Loco. Good luck with your lisis.'

  17. Trial and error…..with Fort Vee compost I use a ratio of 4 (32oz yogurt container) to 1 container water, let sit for about 15 minutes and add a little more water, if needed. This makes about 300 soil blocks

  18. I potted up the slightly larger lisianthus seedlings in a 36 cell tray, so I have 4 of each variety bar one, where I have 8. The rest which were smaller I potted up in a 72 cell tray. I have no idea where I'm gonna put em all, lol. But I've had to drastically cut back on my plans coz I developed a health issue, so I guess I'll see! Good luck to all of us. 🙂

  19. I had started lisianthus seeds over a month ago which sprouted and then I think one day, the tray got dried out. Now there is no green to be seen. lol Do you think it is too late to try starting seeds again? Gardening in zone 5/6 Canada
