I have this rather large bare patch. Should I Re-sod it, or put down sand and let next year's runners colonize it? I'm in Atlanta, so I'm a bit surprised it hadn't already gone dormant, and I'm planning for the spring. I've also considered putting some stairs there to get up to my backyard. Thoughts?

It will fill in on its own but slowly. You could plug some areas from other spots to speed it up. This is your best bet unless you know the cultivar.
If you know why it failed. Fix that first.
