  1. Question. Zone 6b/7. Desire Evergreen or potential deciduous that grows wider (or may pruned as such) and taller to go near a flat wall. So wide and tall recommendation please. May be pruned on the back side only maybe……Thank you.

  2. Jim, what is the best way to get rid of wayward blackberries in a flower bed? Have tried pulling & cutting them out but that hasn't worked! Zone 7B

  3. I bought and used a green frost protection cloth when we got down to 22 last week. When the temp got up the next day and I removed the cloth, the leaves all had frost on them. What is the advantage, if any, to using frost protection when frost happens anyhow?

  4. Hello! What variety of mahonia is next to your blue shed, and how many years did it take to get that tall in your yard? Thank you!

  5. Insulting smokers doesn't really belong on a gardening show. A lot of gardeners may be smokers including myself. My answer would be move if you don't like it.

  6. Hello Jim,
I live just south of Buffalo New York. We have had 3 major snow falls in 3 weeks( about 4 feet total). My garden chores have been removing the snow load off the landscape and garden . My question is what did you see in your travels this summer as far as trends in landscaping and gardening? Thanks.

  7. Oh yes. One thing I've definitely learned is that full sun in my Houston zone 9b is not the same as full sun zone 9 California. I've had lots of plants suffer our entire summer long that had tags that said full sun. Even the most sun tolerant of plants get weary in our Texas August. Oh those Cali gardeners! They are so lucky. But I'm not bitter! haha!

  8. Hi Jim – do you think I should have any concerns about planting a Mahonia Winter Sun in Baltimore area Zone 7b? Will it be considered invasive or dangerous to native wildlife in my area?

  9. I'm in zone 8B and I have a couple of dwarf bottlebrush plants in a garden bed. The temps this fall/winter are getting abnormally low for several days at a time so I put a 5 gallon bucket over them for protection through that. I peeked at them afterwards and they're fine. Can I just leave the buckets over them or would it be better to let them acclimatize to the 40s and 50s and just let them be when it gets cold again?

  10. Someone would become a billionaire overnight if they could develop a herbicide that was biologically targeted at Bermuda grass and nothing else.

  11. Mahonias have really beautiful branch and leaf structure. Just look at your marvel mahonia. The glossy green leaves. Stare at one branch and you will see the teardrop shaped leaves, arrange beautifully on that one branch. Some plants are just aesthetically beautiful without flowers, berries, and color changes. It just so happens that mahonia also tend to have flowers, berries, and color changes.

  12. Hi Steph & Jim, I have a 32 year old Crape Myrtle that I want to remove and replace it with an Osmanthus Fragrans. The problem is that tree won't budge. We've tried with 2 heavy duty trucks and it won't come out of the ground. So my next option is to do something with the trunk/ roots. If we can't cut it up and get it out of the ground, is there some kind of stump killer I can put on it that won't affect the Osmanthus Fragrans that I'm transplanting? (Its 5 years old)
Thanks very much for your help.

  13. Thanks for the videos. Ive learned so much from your Q&A segments.

    QUESTION:
Would a Canadian Hemlock thrive in an area with lots of deer, high winds, and humidity?

I have a one acre flat lot in zone 7a with zero privacy or wind screen.
    🥴
    HAYULP!!

  14. Jim…Thanks for videos. Planning a early spring move for red twig dogwoods, empress of china and dwarf gingko. Should I do a root trim now or is it too late? Zone 7B

  15. Spot on Jim on the Portland/Austin comparison. I garden in both, Portland in summer. Both are 9A. The Pacific Northwest west of the cascades you can grow anything, in Austin very little. The summer difference is often THIRTY DEGREES. And at night Austin never gets cool enough. Winter lows are similar.

  16. Hi Jim – your Marvel Mahonia is HUGE behind you! Question regarding Marvel Mahonia's; do they ever sucker new growth at the bottom with pruning? I ask because I've got a trio of them and one was either limbed up or lost the lower limbs at some point in time.

  17. f/u to Creeping Charlie from this video–zone 8a AL. I have sprayed with Dicamba and with Triclopyr. Nothing helps. Much too much to pull by hand, got to spray. Suggestions?

  18. Glyphosate does work painting it on a stump shortly after freshly cutting it just make sure it’s the concentrate and not mixed with water as you would for a foliage application. For stump painting a little diesel or gas with the gly can help pull it into the stump and root system but not necessary if you have the high concentration one. Cause the fresh cut, the cambium layer is still trying to exchange water and sugar between the leaves and roots so it pulls it into the plant

  19. Any suggestions for shade to dappled sun loving ground cover and/or dwarf shrubs to plant under a crape myrtle tree in 7b, NC? I tried hellebores and heuchera, but they’ve struggled. Ty!

  20. ??? I planted several purple leaf ornamental peach trees that I don't want to produce fruit. Can I prune off the trees to eliminate the fruit production? Basically, I want to make them look like a flatish looking lolipop to block view. They are planted along a 3 ft. tall fence next to a driveway. I don't want the seedlings growing all over, the area will not be mowed as it next to a gravel driveway. Maybe I should just cut them down because it was a bad choice! Conifers will not work as there is only about 18" wide area to plant in. Zone 6 NE Ohio

  21. Hi, again! I posted about planting under a crape myrtle and forgot a couple of things. First, I have severe deer pressure. They even eat things like liroipi and heuchera here. Second, the exposure is WNW. Lastly, there’s an area on the drip line that does get morning sun in from about 9-1 in the summer, and that’s where I’d like a dwarf shrub. The rest of this area varies from dappled to full shade, especially in summer when the trees have leaves. I’d give up on this area, but I live in a townhouse and hate to cede the territory! Thanks again!

  22. Thank you Jim. These weekly Q&A segments are very informative. You explain the answers so well.

  23. On the subject of fear of killing 😂 We just bought a property in Sierra foothills zone 9. Summers are very hot here. The property has incense cedars and blue spruces. They are on an existing watering system but we aren’t sure how much water to give these well established tall trees. How do we make sure they are getting the amount of water they need?

  24. I know you did a video on the new hardiness zone map but could you talk more about the debate in the horticultural world about what is lacking from consideration in the USDA zone map? What climatic factors impact the success of plant growth? Min/Max temps vs average temps, humidity, wind speeds, rainfall, etc. I'm curious to know what the prevailing thought is about the factors that should be included in a true plant hardiness identification system.

I realize what I just asked is probably a video to itself. Thanks Jim for all of the great information. You have become my number one YouTube source for all things Horticultural.

  25. I’m a gardener in Zone 8b (Charleston, SC). My flowerbed borders my neighbor’s zoysia grass lawn. What is the best way to prevent the zoysia rhizomes and stolons from invading my flowerbed?

Would metal garden edging tamped a few inches into the soils be an effective solution? If so, how tall should the edging be?

  26. Question: Did your mature Yuletide camellia that you transplanted make it? I'm planning on doing the same with mine. I'm sure it worked, but was just wondering. 🙂

  27. I have a security light on an electric company owned utility pole in my backyard. It’s been there long before I lived here. I have been here twenty years. The light although I never wanted it has not been a problem because it was not too bright. A couple of months ago unknown to me electricity company came in and put a new fixture up that is I think led. This new light is super bright. Same as street lights. Illuminates my whole backyard. I hate it. I am worried it is going to cause problems for my garden. Affect the birds, plants, insects and animals that live in my backyard. Should I be worried? I have fireflies in the summer and occasional opposums and lots of birds. I have been working very hard to create the garden of my dreams and am scared this is going to affect all. I have called electric company repeatedly to come put a lower wattage light in with no luck. I have a charge in my bill each month for this light I never wanted. I am at the point of getting a BB gun to shoot it out. Will this light have adverse effect on my garden?

  28. I lost 5 leyland cypress during Helene. Any recommendations for dealing with the stumps other than grinding them or digging them up? Zone 8A upstate SC.

  29. Hey Jim and Stephany, wondering if your viewer garden series will continue. I’be accumulated a lot of pics of my first year getting into gardening since your series started and was wondering if y’all plan on continuing it this winter during your travels.

  30. Hey Jim! Love your channel I’ve been obsessed and listening to it daily trying to catch up on all the content!

My question: I just moved into my home (built in 2020) this year and trying to do an overhaul on the yard and shrub beds. Crepe Myrtle’s were planted in every front shrub bed in the neighborhood. They are all pretty heavily infected with bark scale and black sooty mold. I’ve cut back the foliage on mine so the mold stops dripping on the the surrounding plants. I would like to remove the crepe Myrtle but I’ve heard it will sucker from the roots if you dig it up. How can I kill it to prevent this. And should I avoid planting in that area for a while?

  31. Hi Jim. I have a Kotobuki Japanese maple with a large branch coming up from below the graft. When should I remove it? Thanks, and happy holidays!

  32. Hi Jim and Steph! It was nice to experience your garden and interact with you during your summer event! What is your opinion about the American Pillar Arborvitae as a screening plant in Zone 8A (Greenville, NC)? Thanks!

  33. The soil around our foundation was removed so it could be waterproofed… So now we have exposed compacted clay on the sunny west/southwest side of our house. I would like to plant shrubs and perennials in that area. The entire property is sloped. What would you recommend doing to improve the soil before I begin planting? Connecticut zone 6b. Thanks!
