At night I’m struggling to get the temperature above freezing and I’ve been insulating it more and more each day and today the temperature is in the 80’s in the greenhouse and now everything is dying. I’m sure it’s because of the sun going into the greenhouse and hitting it. I can’t seem to do it right. Either it’s too cold or too sunny and everything dies.

  1. You’re going to have to bring them inside. That’s no where near enough insulation.

Once you bring them in you can create a cheap temporary storable mini green house by using some clear shower curtains and PVC pipes if pets or kids are a problem.

More insulation, smudge pots, oscillating fan pointed to ceiling to move heat around, get plants up off ground to about waist level. Make sure they are watered but not too much.

Maybe try to grow plants that are a little closer to your zone than tropicals. Many cacti can tolerate 20 degrees, for example. I use heat mats which keep my greenhouse about 5 degrees warmer than outside, which is enough to keep the tops from freezing and the roots warm enough to not rot. I keep a collection of adeniums, cacti and succulents and my greenhouse dips into the upper 30’s. The cacti love the extreme swings in temperatures like they would naturally get in the desert.
