Monk & Bobby take a look at the classic anime film Ninja Scroll from Yoshiaki Kawajiri in this episode of Classics Of Cinematics.

“In this anime film, Jubei, a highly skilled ninja, is coerced into slaying his own clan of warriors. After begrudgingly killing his fellow swordsmen, he becomes a roving hired assassin. During his travels, he must face off against an organization of demonic ninjas known as the Devils of Kimon, who are plotting to take power of Japan’s government. The Devils will stop at nothing, and have the power to annihilate entire villages. Now, only Jubei and a shogun spy named Dakuan can stop them.”

  1. 12:07 Yeah, the Bamboo Thicket in Bushido Blade 2. Love that game. I always play as Gengoro with katana or nodachi.
12:34 It was Kagero's kodachi. It got stuck when she attacked Utsutsu Mujuro then Jubei insisted that she gets back, Mujuro is his to kill.
Jubei is lucky and Devils of Kimon are tough. Jubei only killed Mushizo, Shijima and Genma on his own.
14:18 Madhouse is a badass studio. They did Trigun, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Satoshi Kon's movies, etc.
14:28 I believe it is inspired by Sonny Chiba and Hiroyuki Sanada's 80s chambara/horror movies. I watched a lot of samurai films and learned of the possible inspiration when I saw their 80s films.
